Gibson’s Finest Canadian Whisky Steps Up to Partner with the CFL on Popular Player Awards
TORONTO — The Canadian Football League Players of the Week and Month awards are back with a new title sponsor, Gibson’s Finest Canadian Whisky, sharp-eyed judges, and a spotlight that’s about to be trained on the best football players in Canada.
“We’re very pleased to announce the Gibson’s Finest Players of the Week, and Gibson’s Finest Players of the Month, awards are here for the 2009 season,” said CFL Commissioner Mark Cohon.
“With Gibson’s Finest Canadian Whisky stepping up to sponsor our weekly and monthly players awards, one of our league’s strongest partners is now associated with one of our most popular initiatives: awards our players strive to achieve and our fans love to debate.”
Every Tuesday or Wednesday during the CFL regular season and playoffs, the Gibson’s Finest CFL Players of the Week will recognize the most outstanding offensive, defensive, special teams and Canadian players from the previous weekend’s games.
The Gibson’s Finest CFL Players of the Month will recognize the most outstanding players in the same categories for July, August, September and October.
And as the official partner of the CFL, the Distiller continues to sponsor the annual Gibson’s Finest CFL Player Awards, featuring the Gibson’s Finest CFL Most Outstanding Player Award, one of the biggest highlights of Grey Cup Week.
“Canadians love their football league and in particular many Canadian Whisky drinkers are CFL enthusiasts,” said Rob Malloch, Gibson’s Finest Chief Marketing Officer.

The 2009 judges for the Gibson’s Finest CFL Players of the Week, and Month, are:
• Duane Forde of the CFL on TSN, a two-time Grey Cup champion known for his deep love of the game and encyclopaedic knowledge of up and coming Canadian football talent.
• Matt Dunigan of the CFL on TSN, a Canadian Football Hall of Famer who was a star CFL quarterback and coach before becoming one of the country’s best known and most passionate football analysts.
• Pierre Vercheval of RDS, another Hall of Famer and former all-star offensive lineman in the CFL, often considered the face of professional football in Quebec.
Highlight packs celebrating the weekly and monthly winners will be featured on CFL.ca.
“Throughout the season, the Gibson’s Finest CFL Players of the Week mark a turning point for our fans, a last chance to look back at the best of the previous week and a reminder that it’s time to gear up for another weekend of tremendous CFL action,” Cohon said.
“When the first awards are handed out this week, with the help of Gibson’s Finest, it will be another sign that the 2009 season is finally underway.”
