Huskies claim fourth straight Loney Bowl

HALIFAX, N.S. — In front of over 4,100 fans at Huskies Stadium in Halifax, the CIS No.9-ranked Saint Mary’s Huskies jumped out to a 27-7 halftime lead and cruised to a 37-8 victory in the 2010 Subway Loney Bowl presented by Alexander Keith’s to claim their fourth consecutive Atlantic University Sport banner.

Slotback Ahmed Borhot, named the Subway Player of the Game and the recipient of the Don Loney Memorial Trophy as the game MVP, had nine catches for 202 yards as the Huskies took hom their 24th Atlantic conference football championship and the program’s 10th title in the past 12 seasons.

First-year pivot Micah Brown completed 19-of-29 passes for 349 yards, one touchdown and one interception, and added 49 yards and one major on the ground.

SMU running back Devon Jones also added a receiving touchdown and a rushing major in the victory.

Acadia led 6-3 in the first quarter on a pair of Mike Rostance field goals, but a 46-yard reception by Borhot set up a short touchdown run from Jones for a 10-6 lead on the last play of the opening quarter.

Acadia quarterback Kyle Graves was 21-of-38 for 251 yards, but was intercepted three times. The SMU defence pressured Acadia into a total of five interceptions, two by corner Eric Black, and knocked Graves from the game in the fourth quarter.

Axemen defensive starters Mike Miller and Ed McNally also went out in the first half with injuries.

Acadia had a punt single and while SMU’s Brett Lauther his second field goal of the half for a 20-point Huskies lead at the half.

Rostance added another single point for the Axemen on a missed 25-yard field goal attempt in the third quarter while Mack Blewett, Brown’s backup, scored on an eight-yard run for SMU in the last minute of the game for the only major of the second half.

Linebacker Brian Ridgeway, who had with three sacks for the Huskies the last time the two teams played in Wolfville, had 9.5 tackles and 1.5 sacks on Saturday.

The Huskies will travel to Calgary this week to face Blake Nill and the Dinos in a rematch of last year’s Uteck Bowl in Halifax. The Dinos defeated the Alberta Golden Bears 56-3 in the Canada West final.

Western visits Laval in the Uteck Bowl next week with the 2010 Vanier Cup slated for November 27 at Laval.
