REGINA — Offensive lineman Gene Makowsky will return for a 17th season with the Saskatchewan Roughriders.
The six-foot-three, 300-pound Saskatoon native re-signed with the CFL club on Tuesday. He was set to become a free agent next month.
Makowsky, 37, was the CFL’s most outstanding lineman in 2004 and 2005 and won a Grey Cup with the Riders in 2007. He is a seven-time West Division all-star and five-time CFL all-star.
Makowsky also has political aspirations.
Premier Brad Wall announced last month that Makowsky will run for the governing Saskatchewan Party in the provincial election next November.
Makowsky will run in the constituency of Regina Dewdney, which has been an NDP stronghold since 1985. New Democrat Kevin Yates has held the seat since 1991.
Makowsky, who studied at the University of Saskatchewan, is poised to become the all-time leader in games played by a Rider. Makowsky is five games behind leader Roger Aldag, who played 266 games with the team.
