Toronto Argonauts slotback Chad Owens was named the Offensive Player of the Week in the Eastern Final. Owens registered a team playoff record 207 yards on 11 receptions in the Argonauts’ 27-20 win over the Montreal Alouettes.
Owens’ crucial 70-yard reception early in the third quarter allowed the Argos to score on the same drive and take the momentum for the second half on Sunday afternoon at Olympic Stadium. Owens’ impressive numbers helped the Argos become the Eastern Division Champions and secure a spot in the 100th Grey Cup.
Toronto Argonauts linebacker Marcus Ball was named the Defensive Player of the Week in the Eastern Final. Ball compiled five tackles and two interceptions in the Argonauts’ 27-20 win over the Montreal Alouettes.
Ball intercepted two Anthony Calvillo passes in the second half that were key in holding off an Alouettes comeback attempt. For his efforts in the Eastern Final, Ball earned his first 2012 Player of the Week Award.
BC Lions kicker Paul McCallum was named the Special Teams Player of the Week in the Western Final. McCallum was a perfect five for five on field goal attempts and converted two of two extra points in the Lions’ 34-29 loss to the Calgary Stampeders.
A steady McCallum was responsible for 17 of his team’s 29 points and earned his first 2012 Player of the Week award for his efforts.
Calgary Stampeders running back Jon Cornish was named the Canadian Player of the Week in the Western Division Final. The New Westminster, BC native ran for a game high 112 yards on 18 carries and also added 42 yards on two receptions in the Stampeders’ 34-29 win over the BC Lions.
Cornish ran the ball effectively all game and racked up 66 yards in the first half to help his team beat the stingy BC Lions and secure a matchup against the Toronto Argonauts in the 100th Grey Cup.
