TORONTO — Released by the Montreal Alouettes in June, defensive back Etienne Boulay finishes the CFL season a Grey Cup winner with the Toronto Argonauts.
The 29-year-old from Montreal spent the first two years of his CFL career (2006 and 2007) under Chris Jones with the Alouettes, and was reunited with the defensive co-ordinator when he signed with Toronto as a free agent in mid-July.
He credits Jones for helping take down the Stampeders 35-22 on Sunday.
“He’s a monster, he’s a beast,” Boulay said of Jones. “He’s the best in the business. I have a lot of respect for him … I think he’s a defensive genius.”
“He just gets the guys ready, he analyses so much. I don’t think the guys sleeps ever. It’s impressive.”
Boulay said the plan all along was to stop the run.
“We knew we were the better team,” he said. “The only way they were going to beat us was if they got big plays … We had to be precise with our assignments and that’s what we did.”
“We worked so hard and I’m so proud of the guys,” he added.
“We focused all week and we sacrificed a lot of sleep, a lot of energy to get ready and execute our coach’s game plan the way we did. It wasn’t perfect at the end but we got a win.”
