Blue Bombers extend All-Star DB Jonathan Hefney

WINNIPEG, MB – The Winnipeg Blue Bombers have re-signed all- star import defensive back Jonathan Hefney today, a month before he was slated to become a free agent.  As per team policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.

“As a key member of our defence, it was important for us to re-sign Jonathan who has been a consistent performer throughout his career in Winnipeg,” said Vice-President and General Manager Joe Mack.  “The way Jonathan plays the game, the type of enthusiasm and excitement he brings to the field, certainly rubs off on the rest of his teammates and his experience is one we value as an organization.  We look forward to having Jonathan continue his high level of play next season.”

Hefney played in all 18 games with the Blue Bombers last season primarily at halfback but also filled in at SAM linebacker when injuries piled up.  Apart from a brief stint with the NFL’s Detroit Lions in 2010, Hefney has never missed a game with Winnipeg since signing with the team in 2009.

Leading the team in tackles last season with 74, Hefney also added one sack, one interception and four fumble recoveries on his way to being named an East Division All-Star for the third time in his career.  Hefney has been named a divisional All-Star in each of his full seasons in the CFL, with the exception of 2010 when he only played in six games after returning from the NFL in September.

In four seasons with Winnipeg, Hefney has registered 241 tackles, 13 special teams tackles, two sacks, 13 interceptions and six fumble recoveries.
