CALGARY — Calgary Stampeders head coach and general manager John Hufnagel announced today the re-signing of non-import safety Eric Fraser.

Fraser, who had been eligible to become a free agent on Feb. 15, was Calgary’s first-round selection (eighth overall) in the 2009 CFL Canadian Draft and he joined the Stampeders in 2010. He has played 53 regular-seasongames and five playoff contests in three seasons with the Red and White.

“I’m pleased that Eric has chosen to remain with the Stampeders,” said Hufnagel. “He has continued to grow as a player during his three years here and believe that the best is yet to come.”

The 2012 season was Fraser’s first as a defensive starter and he was tied for fourth on the team with 48 tackles. He had two interceptions including one that he returned 61 yards for a touchdown in a July 7 game in Toronto. The 25-year-old Burnaby, B.C., native also had one forced fumble, one fumble recovery and one special-teams tackle.

Fraser started all three of the Stamps’ playoff games and recorded a total of 10 tackles.

In 53 career regular-season games, he has amassed 78 tackles, 28 special-teams tackles, one sack and four interceptions.

“I’m happy to be staying in Calgary,” said Fraser. “I’ve recently started a new job in corporate Calgary working with ex-Stampeder Bruce Covernton and this city is now my home. I’m looking forward to the 2013 season and to getting back to the Grey Cup.”
