CALGARY — One of the league’s premier receivers will not make it to free agency as the Calgary Stampeders have inked Maurice Price to a contract extension the club announced Thursday.
Price became one of the league’s most potent pass-catchers in his second year in Calgary last season, combining exceptional speed with solid hands to fill the void left by an injured Nick Lewis.
He was set to become a free agent on February 15, 2014.
“Maurice Price is a very talented player who has shown tremendous big-play ability over his two seasons with us,” said head coach and general manager John Hufnagel. “I look forward to seeing what Mo can do over a full season.”
In 14 games last season, Price hauled in 57 passes for 1,193 yards. His team-leading 10 touchdowns placed him third in the CFL behind just Montreal’s SJ Green (13) and Edmonton’s Fred Stamps (11).
Finishing second on the team in receiving — behind Marquay McDaniel — Price cemented himself as one of the most dangerous deep-threat receivers in a Labour Day matchup with the Eskimos where he hauled in three touchdown passes on 165 yards receiving.
“I’m very happy to get a deal done with the Stampeders,” said Price. “I really couldn’t see myself playing for anybody else. I’m glad to call Calgary home and my family and I are very happy to be staying.”
In 19 total regular-season games over two seasons with the Stampeders, Price has made 75 catches for 1,193 yards and 10 touchdowns. He’s added 19 catches for 327 yards and two touchdowns in four post-season contests.
Price originally joined the Stamps in 2009 and spent 10 weeks on the practice roster. In between Calgary stints, he was with the National Football League’s Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Washington Redskins and Baltimore Ravens.
