Argos extend national OL Wayne Smith

TORONTO – The Toronto Argonauts locked up some key national talent on their O-line on Friday, announcing a contract extension with Wayne Smith through the 2017 season.

Smith, a 6-foot-2, 300-pound native of Burlington, Ont., enters his 12th CFL season and fifth with the Argonauts. He was slated to become a free agent on Feb. 9.

“Wayne’s versatility has made him an invaluable member of our offensive line since he arrived in Toronto,” said Barker. “He is a leader in the locker room and a player that has really bought into the Argonauts culture.”

Since he originally signed with the Argonauts in April 2012, Smith has appeared in 68 regular season games, starting in 40 of those games. The two-time Grey Cup Champion played in 16 regular season games for the Boatmen last season.

“I’m excited to extend my career with the Toronto Argonauts and couldn’t imagine finishing my career anywhere else but here at home in Toronto,” said Smith. “I can’t wait for our new beginning at BMO Field this season.”

Smith was the first overall selection in the 2004 CFL Draft.
