REGINA — International defensive lineman Tearrius George is retiring from the Canadian Football League, the Saskatchewan Roughriders announced today.
“I am stepping away from the game to focus on a personal issue,” stated George. “I would ask for people to respect my family’s privacy during this time.”
Chris Jones, Vice-President of Football Operations, General Manager and Head Coach, said: “Through speaking with Tearrius, we were made aware that he was involved in an incident that has become a police matter. He subsequently informed us he has decided to retire.”
As the police matter involving Tearrius is before the courts, the Riders will have no further comment on it.
Now 33, George originally came to the CFL in 2007 when he signed with the Calgary Stampeders following a four-year NFL career. The 6-foot-4, 277-pound interior lineman recorded eight sacks in his rookie season with Calgary and went on to play three seasons with the Stamps before signing with the Riders in 2011.
Through five seasons as a Rider, George, a Fayetteville, N.C. native, recorded 32 sacks in 80 games. He won a Grey Cup with the Riders in 2013, helping them earn a 45-23 victory over the Ticats on home turf.
