Bombers’ Dressler ruled out of Friday’s game

WINNIPEG — The Winnipeg Blue Bombers announced Wednesday that receiver Weston Dressler will not suit up Friday against the Calgary Stampeders.

Dressler’s status was in question this week after exiting the first quarter of last Friday’s 22-14 home-opening loss to the Montreal Alouettes. The 31-year-old caught three passes inside the opening 15 minutes before taking a hit and being forced to leave with an injury.

Head Coach Mike O’Shea said earlier in the week he was hopeful Dressler could return, but on Wednesday any chances of that were shut down.

Not long after being released by the Riders in one of the off-season’s biggest surprise moves, Dressler was snatched up by the Bombers as one of many high-profile acquisitions. General Manager Kyle Walters also signed hometown star Andrew Harris, former Rider Ryan Smith and kicker Justin Medlock, among others.

Now in his ninth season, Dressler came into the league in 2008 with Saskatchewan, where he went on to play eight seasons in green and white. He has 7,819 receiving yards on 542 career receptions to go with 51 touchdowns in 124 games played.

TSN 1290‘s Darrin Bauming says Thomas Mayo will likely draw the start at slot while Darvin Adams moves into Dressler’s spot at wideout.

The Bombers and Stamps both seek their first win of the season on Canada Day Friday night, when they cap off a CFL double-header at Calgary’s McMahon Stadium.
