Bombers take off, fly up Nissan Titan Power Rankings

The Canadian Press

TORONTO — They’ve done it again. The Ottawa REDBLACKS sit on top of the Nissan Titan Power Rankings for the third week in a row. Trevor Harris and Chris Williams led the REDBLACKS to a tie against the the Calgary Stampeders in Week 3, keeping them at the front of the pack.

The Blue Bombers notched their first win of the season over the Hamilton Tiger-Cats in Week 3, but will they continue to climb? Meanwhile, the Roughriders and Argonauts are also on the rise after their strong Week 3 performances.

They didn’t win, but they didn’t lose either. The REDBLACKS played to a 26-26 tie in overtime against the Calgary Stampeders in Week 3, keeping themselves at the top of the Power Rankings. Trevor Harris had another great week for Ottawa and currently leads the league in passing yards (1,083) and passing touchdowns (9). Chris Williams will likely be Harris’ favourite target for those tosses this week when the REDBLACKS take on the Toronto Argonauts.

The reigning Grey Cup champs nabbed their first win of the season in a 39-36 overtime thriller against Saskatchewan keeping them in the number two spot. Adarius Bowman will be sure to make an impact in Week 4, after his three touchdown performance in Week 3, when the Esks take on the Winnipeg Blue Bombers.

Bo Levi Mitchell and his Stampeders trotted to a tie with the REDBLACKS and stayed in third in the Power Rankings. Mitchell’s offence has shown that it’s a force to be reckoned with so far this season, especially on the ground. Running back Jerome Messam currently leads the league in rushing yards (185) and will be looking to add to that total when his Stamps return to the field from their bye week in Week 5.

The Argos keep on moving up. The Double Blue’s defence and special teams were at the forefront of a 25-14 victory over the BC Lions, moving the Argos up one spot this week in the Power Rankings. If they can continue their strong play on all three sides of the ball, they will have a good chance at handing the Ottawa REDBLACKS their first loss of the season.

The Lions were handed their first loss of the season in Week 3 courtesy of the Toronto Argonauts and their tough defence and fell one spot in the Power Rankings. The Lions will look to get back in the win column and stay on top of the West in Week 4 when they take on the Saskatchewan Roughriders.

The Blue Bombers won their first game of the season in Week 3 in an all-around solid effort, leading to a 28-24 victory over the Hamilton Tiger-Cats. The Bombers seem to have finally solved their slow start woes  –  they scored 22 points in the first half; 15 more points than they have scored in the first halves in their first two games combined. The Bombers will look to keep climbing the Power Rankings when they battle Edmonton this week.

Although the Riders have yet to claim a victory this year, they seem to be a much improved team from their 2015 season and have risen one spot in the Power Rankings. Most importantly for Saskwatchewan, Darian Durant is back and is looking strong in his first two starts. Durant and his Roughriders will look for their first victory of 2016 when they take on the BC Lions in Week 3.

The Hamilton Tiger-Cats struggled to hold on in their 28-24 loss against the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, turning over the ball six times. Jeremiah Masoli, filling in for Hamilton’s star pivot Zach Collaros, leads the CFL in interceptions. He’ll have another shot at taming the ‘Cats offence in Week 4 when Hamilton visits Montreal to take on the Alouettes.

A week off didn’t help the Montreal Alouettes and their disintegrating receiving corps in the Power Rankings as they fall to last place. Slotback S.J. Green and wide receiver Kenny Stafford are both injured and to add even more salt to the wound, wide receiver Duron Carter will serve his one-game suspension this week. That means the Als will be without their top three receiving options when they take on the Ticats in Week 4.
