CFL Pick ‘Em Marquee Matchup: Week 5

THE CANADIAN PRESS

TORONTO — The CFL Pick ‘Em Marquee Matchup shifts slightly this week, going from Regina to Winnipeg for a battle between the Bombers and Stamps on Thursday Night Football.

It’s a game that could affect the balance of power in the almighty CFL West Division, as a win by the Bombers would pull four of five teams in the division within a single victory so far in 2016.

Of course, when you’re 1-3, that’s easier said than done. The Bombers appear to be improving, but the Stampeders are well-rested after their bye week and are returning to health. It starts with the big boys up front, where, for the first time since June 1, all five regulars on Calgary’s O-line practised this week and are primed to suit up on Thursday.

Bo Levi Mitchell and the Stamps have played well since a season-opening loss to BC but with a record of 1-1-1, they’ll look to go above .500 and pick up their first win of the season away from home.

You may see even more urgency from the Bombers, a team that feels it’s close after dropping a 20-16 decision to Edmonton last weekend. Given every opportunity to defeat the defending Grey Cup Champions, the Bombers managed only three second-half points en route to their third loss of 2016.

There was no doubting who the better team was in Week 2, when the Stamps claimed their home-opener with a 36-22 win over the Bombers — a score made closer by a fourth-quarter surge from Drew Willy. But while the Stampeders have since tied and gotten a week off, Winnipeg has shown improvement in tough matchups with the Ticats and Eskimos.

Expect Thursday’s matchup to be much closer than fans and writers predict, and don’t be shocked if the Bombers pull off one the big early upsets of 2016.

With the visitors winning 12 of 16 games this year (including a tie), it’s no wonder the writers and fans are picking Calgary to go on the road and handle Winnipeg. Could this be the week the home teams (and the Bombers) turn the tables?

Keep an eye on the pick trend and if you haven’t already, log in and make your pick! Kickoff arrives Thursday night at 8:30 p.m. ET.
