CFL Pick ‘Em Marquee Matchup: Week 6

Jimmy Jeong/CFL.ca

TORONTO — It only makes sense that this week’s Marquee Matchup is a battle for first place in the West, which brings us to Calgary for a Week 6 duel between the Stampeders and Lions.

The Lions have surprised many with their 3-1 start, one that includes a 20-18 come-from-behind win over the Stampeders in Week 1 to kick off the season at BC Place. But things are also heating up in Calgary, where the Stamps haven’t lost since then (2-0-1), coming up with a pair of wins over the Bombers and a hard-fought tie with the league-leading Ottawa REDBLACKS.

Bo Levi Mitchell will look to extend his streak to 20 games with at least a touchdown pass while a win would improve his record as a starting quarterback to 31-7-1. Jonathon Jennings is also heating up though, now two weeks removed from a career day vs. the Riders in which he threw for 429 yards and three touchdowns on 25-of-40 passing.

Both could be in for a long night against top-notch defences that rank first and second in points allowed and opponent offensive touchdowns, and second and fourth in fewest net yards allowed. These units have a combined 23 QB sacks and have dominated time of possession (Calgary No. 1 at 31:35; BC third at 28:43).

In a clash of exciting young pivots and two of the CFL’s top defences, Friday night’s clash truly is a marquee matchup to watch.

Timely scoring and a special teams touchdown helped the Lions come back from two scores down in the second half to earn an unexpected two points over their division rival. That left the Stampeders fuming, missing out on a game they believed was theirs for the taking.

Don’t expect the Stamps to have forgotten or forgiven, as they lay eyes on the top seed in the West as we cross the quarter-season threshold.

In this Friday night matchup, something’s got to give as the Stampeders are dominant at home while the Lions have gone 15-6 coming off the bye week since 2002, which they’re doing this week after getting a week off to rest.

The Lions weren’t considered a division favourite coming into the season but a win here would definitely open some eyes. The Stamps, meanwhile, have a statement to make of their own after also being written off by pundits this off-season.

Keep an eye on the pick trend and if you haven’t already, log in and make your pick! Kickoff arrives Friday night at 10 p.m. ET.
