Nissan Titan Power Rankings: REDBLACKS rise despite loss

TORONTO — The Stamps just keep on rolling.

After a 48-23 Week 13 victory over the Ottawa REDBLACKS, Calgary notched its ninth straight win and became the first team in 2016 to clinch a playoff spot, solidifying the top spot in the Nissan Titan Power Rankings.

Despite both teams coming away with losses, the REDBLACKS and Argonauts moved up one spot in the Power Rankings but will they continue their rise?

This Week: 1 | Last Week: 1

This is not a recording – the Stampeders are still on top. Calgary scored 30 points in the first half of the contest against the REDBLACKS and never looked back en route to its ninth win in a row. With the victory, the Stamps also became the first team this season to clinch a playoff spot. Can they continue their streak against Winnipeg, a team riding a winning streak of their own, this week?

This Week: 2 | Last Week: 2

After their Week 13 bye, the Lions added Terrell Sinkfield to their already dominant receiving corps, giving Jonathon Jennings yet another target to throw to. This week, BC visits Edmonton to take on the reigning Grey Cup champions, hoping to separate themselves from the Blue Bombers, who they are tied with in points, in the West.

Another week, another Blue Bomber victory. Winnipeg is riding an impressive seven game winning streak, having yet to lose a game with Matt Nichols under centre. Facing Calgary in Week 14, the Bombers have the opportunity to prove if they really can keep up with the top teams in the league.

This Week: 4 | Last Week: 4

With the Ticats’ last-second victory – thanks to a Brett Maher field goal with no time left on the clock – Hamilton vaulted into first place in the East. But, with only two points separating them from the third place Argonauts, their hold on that spot may not last. The Tabbies head to Saskatchewan in Week 14 to take on the Roughriders, trying to stay ahead of Ottawa and Toronto.

Despite the REDBLACKS’ loss to the league’s best team, Ottawa moved up one spot in the Power Rankings. Ottawa hosts the Argonauts in Week 14, hoping to catch the Tiger-Cats, and keep Toronto behind them, in the East Division.

When the Argos announced Ricky Ray was going to be sidelined with an injury for the coming weeks, many wondered how Dan LeFevour would fare running the offence. In his first two games as a starter with the Double Blue, LeFevour has completed 46-of-70 passes for 600 yards and five touchdowns. Can LeFevour continue to roll and lead the Argos into a playoff spot?

Despite the Esks losing their last three contests, including last week in overtime to the Riders, they still have a powerhouse of players that can get the job done. Adarius Bowman, who collected 152 yards on nine catches against Saskatchewan, and Derel Walker are still two of the top receivers in the league. Those two receivers, combined with the league’s leading passer Mike Reilly, are a handful for any other team’s defence to deal with.

The Montreal Alouettes hung in with the Tiger-Cats last week in a defensive battle but fell short at the last minute. The Alouettes head into a Week 14 bye with a 3-9 record and will return with a different coach on the bench. Montreal announced on Monday that Jacques Chapdelaine will take over as the team’s interim head coach for the remainder of the 2016 season. Can the change behind the bench spark the rest of the Als’ season?

Despite missing their leading receiver, Naaman Roosevelt, the Riders picked up win number two of 2016 last week. Darian Durant ran the game winning touchdown into the end zone in overtime, picking up his first win in two years. Not to mention, the victory was over the reigning Grey Cup Champion Edmonton Eskimos. Have the Riders turned the corner on their season?
