The Weekly Say: A question for every team in Week 17

Johany Jutras/CFL.ca

TORONTO — A division championship has been clinched and so have three playoff spots, but what do we know heading into Week 17?

The Riders will not be competing for the 104th Grey Cup Championship come November, but other than that? Everything is up in the air as teams fight for positioning with only four weeks of the 2016 season remaining.

If the playoffs started today, the Argos and Als would join the Riders on the outside looking in. Meanwhile, the Eskimos would be gunning to become the first team in history to play for a Grey Cup Championship representing the opposite division.

Heading into Week 17, we ask questions such as ‘will Adarius Bowman reach 2,000 receiving yards’ and ‘should 2016 be considered a success for the Riders’?

That and, in the end, who will be in the playoffs when the final whistle blows on Nov. 5 at some time around 10:00 p.m. ET?

We ask the tough questions, you answer in The Weekly Say.

Here are nine pressing questions for Week 17:

1. Should 2016 be considered a success for the Riders?

It wasn’t long ago that the Riders were 1-10 and on the verge of a second straight disastrous season — this one coming in their final year at old Mosaic Stadium. It’s amazing how quickly things change.

Three consecutive wins and even more close contests in a row have made the Riders a respectable team, one that some people believe would currently be the best team in the CFL East Division.

While the Riders have now officially been eliminated from playoff contention, Chris Jones appears to have the building blocks in place to lead to sustainable long-term success.

With that said, should 2016 be considered a success for the Riders?

2. Is Trevor Harris still Ottawa’s quarterback of the future?

Just when you though the quarterback controversy in the nation’s capital had died long ago, Trevor Harris gets benched and we’re back to square one.

OK, so having two starting-calibre quarterbacks, including last year’s Most Outstanding Player, isn’t such a bad thing.

Either way, Henry Burris is back at the helm of the REDBLACKS’ offence and could have a chance to run away with the job. That might have more to do with Rick Campbell trying to provide a spark — highly needed for a team that’s gone 3-7 over its last 10 games. But Harris’ hand over that stretch can’t be ignored.

That Harris isn’t Campbell’s go-to guy heading into a must-win home and home against the Ticats could be concerning for REDBLACKS fans because when both quarterbacks were healthy and Campbell handed the job to Harris, the intention was for Harris to take those reins and never look back.

Harris still holds the highest quarterback rating in the league and Burris is Burris, but is Harris still Ottawa’s quarterback of the future?

 3. Will Adarius Bowman eclipse the 2K receiving yards mark?

With 1,609 receiving yards and eight touchdowns, Adarius Bowman is putting up a season for the ages.

Will he finish as the CFL leader in receiving yards? Yes, that’s almost a foregone conclusion, but what’s the next major milestone for No. 4?

Bowman isn’t on pace to become the fourth receiver in CFL history to reach 2,000 yards but he’s pretty close. His average this season is 107.2, which over the final few games would put him on pace to finish with 1,930 yards — 70 shy of the illustrious mark.

If the 31-year-old can up his totals and average 130.3 yards over the Esks’ final three games then he will reach the 2,000-yard bar.

Considering Bowman averaged 144 yards per game over his first three games of the season that’s perfectly possible — but will he do it?

4. Does the Ticats’ recent roster shakeup favour them to win the East?

A 3-3 record out of the gate brought plenty of hope in Tiger Town. After all, the team was at .500 and sitting in a good position to win the East with a Zach Collaros return imminent.

Few predicted what was to come — a 3-5 record with Collaros under centre and a team that would sit two games below .500 entering the final stretch drive.

Yes, the Ticats just haven’t been the Ticats this season and something needed to change. It did, as over Thanksgiving came along Justin Capicciotti and Xavier Fulton through trade along with Kendial Lawrence and Keon Raymond among others via free agency.

Capicciotti adds another high-end pass rusher to an already-vaunted Ticat D-line while Fulton is expected to start at left tackle, but with Collaros already ruled out in Week 17 and a crucial home and home with the REDBLACKS on the way, are the recent moves enough to propel the Ticats to East Division favourite?

 5. Are Elimimian and Bighill the best defensive duo of all-time?

Solomon Elimimian and Adam Bighill are all but guaranteed to become the first teammates in CFL history to record 100 or more defensive tackles in the same season.

The numbers are impressive on their own, but watch the Lions’ linebackers do work on game nights and you’ll see plenty more for them to brag about.

More than just numbers, Elimimian and Bighill are pretty much the identity of the BC Lions football club. They embody what a Wally Buono-coached team is all about and make opponents certain that a night facing the Lions defence is not going to be a walk in the park.

With that said, while the two international linebackers are probably the most vaunted pair in the CFL right now, where do they rank among all-time defensive duos as they get set to cross the century mark together?

 6. Which potential playoff opponent presents the biggest problem for Calgary?

We know where the Calgary Stampeders will be playing when the Western Final arrives in Mid-November. Who they’ll be playing against is a different story.

The Stamps will get two weeks off (a regular season bye week and a playoff bye week) before taking on either the BC Lions, Winnipeg Blue Bombers or Edmonton Eskimos, needing just one more victory to return to the 104th Grey Cup following a year away from it all.

There’s plenty of talk surrounding how the Stampeders should approach the long layoff, especially considering they’ve already clinched, but what about the discussion involving their first-round opponent?

All three teams present their own challenges. The Lions are the only team that has beaten Calgary this year and are a well-rounded group with plenty of big-play ability. The Bombers went toe to toe with Calgary just a few weeks ago and held a lead inside the last 20 seconds. The Eskimos, meanwhile, appear to be getting hot at the right time and would make for quite the heavyweight tilt for the third year in a row in a Western Final.

If the Stampeders could avoid any one team in the Western Final, who should it be?

 7. Will the Argos make the playoffs in 2016?

It’s hard to think back and remember a time that the Argos were 4-2, leading the East Division standings not long after Logan Kilgore’s first career start and victory. Since then the Boatmen have gone 1-8 and have gone through multiple other quarterbacks, from Ricky Ray to Dan LeFevour to, now, Drew Willy.

True, a lot has gone wrong this season for the Argos and Head Coach Scott Milanovich is doing a little bit of in-season rebuilding with his club after changing quarterbacks and releasing star receivers Tori Gurley, Kevin Elliott and Vidal Hazelton.

Yet despite their troubles and back-to-back one-sided losses to Montreal and Calgary, the Argos are very much in the playoff picture this season and have a chance of hosting a playoff game at BMO Field come November.

They probably have to win their last three games and will need some help from others in the process, but will Scott Milanovich’s club claw back and get to the post-season?

8. Who should be the Alouettes’ head coach in 2017?

The Alouettes’ coaching change looked like pure genius after a one-sided win over the Argos, then maybe not as much following a devastating loss to the Eskimos.

Rome wasn’t built in a day and the Alouettes have shown progress as a team since switching from Jim Popp at head coach to the gifted offensive mind of Jacques Chapdelaine a few weeks ago. The big question as the Als fight to the end for a playoff spot is whether or not Chapdelaine fits in as the coach next year.

It would be a shame for Chapdelaine’s first coaching stint to end so soon, but the reality is the Alouettes have some options they need to consider. Some talk had Anthony Calvillo being promoted from offensive coordinator to head coach as he continues to learn the ropes. Then there are the questions about Marc Trestman, the Als’ former coach who was dismissed by the NFL’s Baltimore Ravens recently.

Should Chapdelaine return as the team’s head coach next season? And if not, who?

9. Is Tori Gurley the Bombers’ most dangerous receiving threat?

So we know that the Bombers are getting an upgraded receiving corps with former Argonaut Tori Gurley in the fold, but just how much of a boost are they getting?

Gurley offers Matt Nichols and company something that others like Weston Dressler and Ryan Smith don’t: A big target with a huge catch radius that can out-muscle anyone for the ball. Gurley truly is one of those players that, if you throw him the ball in a one-on-one situation, there’s a pretty good chance he’ll win the battle and come up with it.

With that said, does Gurley suddenly become the Bombers’ most dangerous receiving threat? It’s a tough call with Smith and Dressler already being on the board but we’ve seen Gurley’s ability to make explosive big plays.
