Bombers release veteran QB Kevin Glenn

WINNIPEG — Kevin Glenn’s return to Winnipeg has come to an end after the Blue Bombers announced Friday that they have released the veteran quarterback.

“The decision was made to grant Kevin the opportunity to explore other options after we informed him we weren’t going to be able to immediately come to an agreement contractually,” Blue Bombers General Manager Kyle Walters said in a statement. “Given Kevin’s longevity and veteran status in our league, we felt it was appropriate and the right thing to do given the circumstances.”

The Bombers re-acquired Glenn in a trade at the midway point of last season after dealing then backup Drew Willy to Toronto.

Glenn is a veteran of 16 CFL seasons. He has started nine games with Montreal last season, completing 222 of his 314 passes for 2,547 yards and 13 touchdowns. Throughout his career, Glenn has played 250 games, throwing for 48,766 yards and 270 touchdowns. He has led two teams to Grey Cup appearances, including one with Winnipeg in 2007.

Glenn sits third on the Bombers all-time passing yardage list at 18,116 and fifth on the club’s all-time passing touchdowns list. He led the club in passing for five straight seasons (2004-2008), and was the East Division Most Outstanding Player in 2007.

The Bombers are currently in the midst of trying to re-sign Matt Nichols who emerged as their no. 1 QB after Willy struggled in the first third of the 2016 campaign.  Their commitment to Nichols was confirmed following the trade of Willy.

The Blue Bombers are also looking to continue the development of another quarterback, Dominique Davis, after they inked him to a contract extension last week.
