Knapton extends with Als, avoids free agency

MONTREAL — The Montreal Alouettes have a key member of their pass rush back in the mix as the club announced they have extended DE Gabe Knapton on Friday to a two-year deal.

Knapton was listed as no. 17 on CFL.ca’s Top 30 Pending Free Agents list last month.

“The resigning of Gabriel is very important to our team, in particular to our defensive squad”, said Alouettes General Manager Kavis Reed. “His character and leadership are two elements which we hope will help lead our team to success in 2017.”

Knapton started all 18 games for the Alouettes in 2016, recording 49 defensive tackles, nine sacks and one forced fumble.

The 27-year-old signed with Montreal in 2014 and went on to have an excellent rookie season. He recorded 34 defensive tackles, nine sacks and one forced fumble. He finished second on the team in sacks behind John Bowman who took down quarterbacks 12 times. That performance earned Knapton to be named the Alouettes Rookie of the Year.

In 2015, Knapton started right where he left off, recording 57 defensive tackles and 11 sacks.
