REDBLACKS officially ink Spencer to one-year deal

The Canadian Press

OTTAWA — The Ottawa REDBLACKS continue to bolster their receiving corps, officially announcing on Wednesday the addition of receiver Diontae Spencer.

The deal brings the diminutive but talented 24-year-old to the nation’s capital through the 2017 season.

Spencer returned after hurting his back and missing the beginning of 2016 as one of the Argos’ go-to wideouts. As a versatile pass-catcher, Spencer caught 71 passes for 706 yards and three majors while also returning 33 punts for 341 yards.

The 24-year-old signed with the Argos in 2014 and suited up in 10 games in 2015. He hauled in 36 catches for 502 yards and three touchdowns in his rookie season, while also returning six punts for 43 yards and 27 kickoffs for 555 yards.

Ottawa’s addition of Spencer marks what’s been a busy start to free agency. With Ernest Jackson and Chris Williams seemingly on the outs, Spencer and another former Argo in Kenny Shaw will catch passes from Trevor Harris in 2017.

On defence, meanwhile, the REDBLACKS have added Khalil Bass to their weak side linebacker position along with Argos corner A.J. Jefferson.

Spencer was originally the 10th-ranked player among CFL.ca’s top 30 free agents.
