Rumours swirling as Argos GM/coach search continues

TORONTO — As the search for the Argos next head coach and general manager continue, so too do the rumours as to who the potential candidates could be.

The most recent speculation surrounds not only former Montreal Alouettes general manager Jim Popp but also his former head coach Marc Trestman.

Chatter was fueled late Tuesday night when Popp was seen sitting with Argonauts co-owner and MLSE chairman Larry Tannenbaum at a Toronto Maple Leafs game.  Since then, multiple reports have surfaced regarding Popp’s potential future with the Argos and his ability to lure Trestman with him.

The Argonauts have been in search of a general manager since mid-January when they relieved Jim Barker of his duties after seven years as the head of their football operations.

Popp and the Alouettes parted ways at the end of the 2016 season where he was at the helm of the organization for two decades.

Popp has no shortage of accolades on his resume but perhaps none more glowing than the five seasons he spent with Trestman as his head coach.  In that time, the tandem went to three Grey Cups, winning back-to-back championships in 2009 and 2010.
