TORONTO — S.J. Green finds himself in a new home this season after spending his entire 10-year CFL career with the Montreal Alouettes and the receiver couldn’t be happier about the fresh start.
When news broke that Green had been traded to the Toronto Argonauts for a 6th round selection in the 2017 CFL Draft and a conditional pick in the 2018 Draft on Thursday, the 31-year-old was thrilled.
“I was happy,” Green told Davis Sanchez of The Waggle podcast. “I was excited. Especially after having the opportunity to talk with Kavis (Reed) and I was talking about my future. I felt like this would be the best opportunity for me moving forward. When everything was finally official, I was beyond happy.”

Green joins Jim Popp and Marc Trestman in Toronto this season, two people who had a major impact on his illustrious career. Both Popp and Trestman were at the helm of the Alouettes’ leadership group when Green was at his most productive, and according to the receiver, both were vital to his development.
“Marc Trestman is that coach that helped transcend me from a young boy to a professional football player,” Green said. “Key word being professional. He taught me a lot about how to approach the game. He instilled a lot of discipline into us, a lot of small details and things to pay attention to that helped a lot of us grow and turn that next page in our lives.
“I attribute a lot of that to Marc Trestman to be able to get back to this point and work with him again is like a dream come true.”
Popp, too, helped Green get his career rolling in the CFL, giving him a shot in Montreal. Now, even with Green coming off a desvistating knee injury suffered in Week 2 of last season, Popp is again willing to take a chance on him.
“He’s the guy that believed in me when probably when nobody else in the industry was willing to give me a chance and he did,” Green said of Popp. “Especially given my injury that took place last year, it just feels good to have somebody that wants to give me an opportunity and believes in me enough to give me that chance.”
