TORONTO -- It's been a busy but fulfilling week for two members of the Toronto Argonauts' roster. DT Etienne Legare and RB Andre Durie are returning from a trip 'out east', as they say in Toronto, having spent a week with the good people of New Brunswick.
Last Tuesday (May 11), Durie boarded a plane at Toronto's Pearson International Airport and Legare stepped into Jean Lesage International Airport in Quebec City. Both were headed towards the same destination; a small town just outside Moncton, New Brunswick called Sackville. Neither player, however, could fully understand what awaited them. Volunteers had launched the Sackville Minor Football Association (SMFA) annual spring football camp and the pros had been called in to share some advice, offer instruction and have some laughs with more than 100 excited campers ranging from 8-year olds to high school students. It was the camp's highest enrollment ever.
Both players agreed that there's nothing quite like the east coast hospitality they received while in town. The players were treated to home-cooked dinners, a special reception hosted by Mt. Allison University and the town of Sackville, and gift packages from SMFA volunteers. The players were also invited to meet camp sponsors, given tours of the area and chose to take time to visit every radio station in Moncton.
During the camp, the kids were so interested in Durie's new Reebok ZigTech shoes that he decided to something about it. Durie, one of the Argos' Reebok player representatives for 2010, went to the first local Reebok retail store he could find, purchased a pair of the shoes and raffled them off to the campers. Included with the shoes was a gift receipt so the winning camper could have a pair in his or her own size.
Most of the week has been chronicled in this photo gallery. The final picture is of Etienne and Andre with Cst. Don Rose of the Sackville RCMP. He not only took the entire week off to chauffeur the players, he was also the official photographer.
The Toronto Argonauts would like to thank all of the volunteers at Sackville Minor Football Association for their generosity and time throughout the week. Special thanks to Scott McCluskey, Wray Perkin and Florence & Don Rose.
