TORONTO -- The Toronto Argonauts have traded up with the Edmonton Eskimos and taken Manitoba running back Anthony Coombs with the third overall pick in the CFL Draft.
The Edmonton Eskimos acquired Toronto’s first and second round picks (6th and 15th overall) in the 2014 CFL Canadian Draft; import offensive lineman Tony Washington, import defensive back Otha Foster and a negotiation list player in exchange for Edmonton’s first and third round picks (3rd and 21st overall) in the 2014 CFL Canadian Draft and a negotiation list player.
Ranked 8th on the final Scouting Bureau Ranking in April, Coombs brings speed, quickness and good hands to a Toronto club that already boasts Andre Durie.
Coombs hasn’t even signed his first pro contract yet but already he is drawing comparisons to two of the league’s premier talents.
The versatile tailback wrapped up an impressive weekend of testing at the 2014 CFL Combine in March and before he had a chance to settle back home and prepare for the Draft, he was already being talked about in the same light as BC Lions running back Andrew Harris and Durie.
Coombs ran a 4.522, good enough for fourth overall at the Combine in the 40-yard Dash. He also finished fourth in the Vertical Jump (37.00”) and third in the Shuttle (4.15).
