Khalif Mitchell Back in BC

VANCOUVER -- The BC Lions announced today that  they have signed defensive tackle Khalif Mitchell.

Last year, Mitchell enjoyed a standout season for the Double Blue posting 32 defensive tackles and a team-leading five sacks which earned him East Division and CFL All-Star kudos and came close to his career season with the Lions in 2011 when he notched 33 tackles and six sacks.

“As I have said in the past, championships are won at the line of scrimmage and signing Khalif who is one of the most dominant linemen in our league will greatly strengthen our defence,” said VP of football operations and GM Wally Buono.

“We’re confident that he is prepared to do whatever it takes to make us a championship organization on and off the field.”

Now entering his fifth CFL season, Mitchell has played 50 regular season games (33 with BC) recording 86 career tackles along with 13 sacks. The hulking defensive tackle has two CFL All-Star selections to his credit (2013, 2011) and also helped the Lions to a Grey Cup championship in 2011.

“It’s wonderful to be back in the city that I fell in love with four years ago,” said Mitchell. “I am excited to begin a new chapter with the Lions and do my part to help win a championship for this organization and our fans.”

Shell released by Lions

The BC Lions also announced today the release of veteran defensive back Lin-J Shell.

Shell leaves BC after spending two seasons wearing Orange and Black. Since joining the Lions as a free agent in 2012, Shell has amassed 58 tackles, four sacks, one interception, and two fumble recoveries.

Prior to arriving in BC, Shell spent three seasons with the Argonauts, registering 222 tackles, four sacks, seven interceptions and seven fumble recoveries.

His best season was in 2009, as he racked up a career best 94 tackles, one sack and two interceptions.

1st I'll start with shell who should be packing now for his trip to the ottawa RBs!! now 4 mitchell!! is this now the end of keron mitchell in vancouver?!! will someone please explain to me 1st that mitchell plays for the lions which are owned by senator david braley then 2ndly gets traded to the toronto argonauts who are also owned by senator david braley. 3rdly argos release mitchell so he can attempt to gain NFL employment BUT NO instead he now signs with the lions how are still owned by senator david braley!! sorry BUT I'm the only one to see collusion here between braley and the CFL head office?!! sorry BUT this isn't a way to run a professional league sending players back and forth between the argos and lions!! lastly shell also fits into this mess also!! cut by toronto then signed by vancouver!!

1st, I'll start with Braley, who is no longer a senator. 2nd, remember what happened with Ricky Foley in 2010? After Wally released him to pursue the nfl he said he would come back to vancouver, but ended up finishing the year in toronto.

Great to have mitchell back. The lions really missed that solid push on the D line last year. Shell was never a full time starter in BC so his release will not be that significant, he will be replaced by someone younger and cheaper.

We know Barker has agreements with his players to release them to allow them to pursue opportunities in the NFL . Was Mitchell released so he could go back out west & join BC ?
