CALGARY -- Another day, another signing for the Calgary Stampeders

Head coach and general manager John Hufnagel announced Monday the re-signing of import cornerback Fred Bennett. As per team policy, terms of the agreement were not disclosed.

Bennett, started all 18 regular-season games as well as the Western Final for the Stampeders in 2013, recording 38 tackles, including two tackles for loss, two special-teams tackles, three interceptions, five pass knockdowns and three forced fumbles.

One of the forced fumbles came on a memorable special-teams play as Bennett hustled to catch up to Montreal Alouettes kick-returner Noel Devine and punched the ball loose for a momentum-changing turnover.

“Fred has been a reliable player and an important contributor to our defence as well as to our special teams since he joined the Stampeders two years ago,” said Hufnagel. “I’m pleased that he has made this commitment to the club and expect more good things from him in the years to come.”

Bennett, 30, has never missed a regular-season or playoff game in his two seasons with the Stampeders. In 36 regular-season contests, he had 85 tackles, five special-teams tackles, five interceptions, 10 pass knockdowns and four forced fumbles.

“The Stampeders are a first-class organization and I’m happy to be staying,” said Bennett. “I’m still looking for the first ring of my football career and I believe we’re very close to a championship. I’m looking forward to the new season and to finishing the job. I truly believe that Calgary is the right place for me.”

This why Huff was appointed the GM and Head Coaching duties for making good decisions. Bennett has proven to be a key element in the Stamps defense as well as special teams. Another good signing by Huff and the Stamps.
