TORONTO -- The Toronto Argonauts announced that they have signed its entire 2014 CFL Draft class today.
Under contract are third overall pick RB Anthony Coombs, OL Jas Dhillon, LB Thomas Miles, FB Alexandre Dupuis, DB Eric Black, WR Evan Pszczonak, WR Tore Corrado and OL Kirby Fletcher. All of these players will be on the field tomorrow at York Stadium for the first day of Rookies & Quarterbacks Camp.
The Argonauts traded up in the draft to take RB Anthony Coombs in the 1st round (3rd overall).
The Double Blue sent its 1st round pick (6th overall), 2nd round pick (15th overall), import OL Tony Washington, import DB Otha Foster and the rights to a negotiation list player to Edmonton for the 3rd overall choice (Coombs), 3rd round selection (21st overall) and the rights to a negotiation list player.
Coombs spent four years with the University of Manitoba Bisons (2010-2013) and totalled 2,232 rushing yards for 17 touchdowns, and 51 receptions for 840 yards and 11 touchdowns. He left the CIS ranked 7th all-time in touchdowns and holds a conference record 107-yard touchdown run.
Finishing his university career as a three-time Canada West All-Star and a two-time CIS First Team All-Canadian (2011, 2013), Coombs was named the Bisons’ 2013 Athlete of the Year.
UBC Thunderbird OL Jaskaran Dhillon was drafted in the 3rd round (21st overall) following a trade with Edmonton. He joins the Argos after three seasons at UBC (2011-2013) and one season with the University of Regina (2010). As a senior, he was named to the 2013 CIS All-Canadian first team and named Canada West All-Star. Born in B.C., Jas is Sikh with family from the northern state of Punjab.
LB Thomas Miles, a second selection from Manitoba by Toronto and teammate of Coombs, was drafted in the 4th round (33rd overall) in the 2014 CFL Canadian Draft. During his four seasons as a Bison he played in 25 games and recorded 80 defensive tackles, 3.5 tackles for loss, one sack and a touchdown. In 2013, he was ranked 9th in Canada West with 40 total tackles (33 solo) in eight games.
The Argonauts drafted FB Alexandre Dupuis in the 4th round (36th overall) of the 2014 CFL Draft, the pick came via trade with Saskatchewan on June 10, 2013. Dupuis spent four seasons in his hometown with the University of Montreal (2010-2013). He made an impact as a rookie when he made two receptions for 27 yards and a touchdown, six tackles, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery on defence.
DB Eric Black, Toronto native and younger brother of Argonauts’ safety Matt Black, was drafted in the 5th round (38th overall) of the Draft. The pick was acquired by Toronto via a trade with Winnipeg in 2013 He played four seasons at St. Mary’s and tallied 44 tackles, 11 pass break-ups, two interceptions, and a touchdown. In 2013, Black was named an AUS All-Star on defence.
Western Ontario receiver Evan Pszczonak (PUSH-ON-ACK) joins the Argonauts after being drafted in the 5th round (42nd overall) of the CFL Draft. He played four years for the University of Windsor (2010-2013) and recorded 109 receptions for 1,942 yards and 19 touchdowns. In 2013, he ranked 6th in the CIS with 646 receiving yards on 42 catches and 6 touchdowns, and was named Second-Team All-CIS as a senior. Pszczonak recorded the best vertical at the CFL Combine in Toronto, leaping 40 inches.
Receiver Tore Corrado, drafted in the 6th round (51st overall) by Toronto was a four year player at Simon Fraser University (2010-2013). He recorded 55 receptions for 715 yards and four touchdowns and returned 15 kicks for 460 yards and one touchdown.
In his final year, he was ranked third in the NCAA for kickoff returns, and was the recipient of the Terry Fox Award for Most Inspirational Athlete.
The final 2014 CFL Draft selection for Toronto was OT Kirby Fletcher, taken in the 7th round (60th overall). Fletcher spent four seasons with Acadia on defence (2010-2013), despite being drafted as an offensive lineman. In 31 games, he recorded 58.5 tackles, seven quarterback sacks, 18 tackles for loss, and four pass breakups. Fletcher was named to the AUS All-Star team in 2013 at defensive tackle.
The Toronto Argonauts would also like to welcome non-import QB Jazz Lindsey, from the University of Guelph, who will be participating in this year’s Argos training camp.
Lindsey has played in 22 games (20 starts) for the University of Guelph Gryphons from 2011-13. For his CIS career, the Markham, Ontario native, who played for Markham District High School, has completed 342 of 605 pass attempts (57%) for 4,536 yards and 33 touchdowns, while also adding 101 rushing attempts for 528 yards and 6 touchdowns.
