EDMONTON -- A pair of former Edmonton Eskimo greats – Hugh Campbell and Warren Moon – are among the newest inductees into Canada’s Sports Hall of Fame. The induction ceremony will be held November 3, 2009 in Toronto.
Quarterback Warren Moon joined the Edmonton Eskimos in 1978 after a sparkling collegiate career at the University of Washington. In just six seasons with Edmonton (1978 – 1983) Moon helped lead the Esks to a remarkable five straight Grey Cup wins. In his final season in Canada, Moon won the Schenley Award as the CFL’s Most Outstanding Player as he threw for 5,648 yards and 31 touchdowns.
Moon would enjoy tremendous success in the NFL with Houston, Minnesota, Seattle and Kansas City before retiring in 2000 as the most prolific passer in the history of professional football. Moon is the only player to be inducted into both the Canadian and Pro Football Halls of Fame. In 2001, Moon’s name was added to the Eskimo Wall of Honour at Commonwealth Stadium.
As Head Coach, Hugh Campbell guided Edmonton to six consecutive Grey Cup appearances, winning five in a row from 1978 – 1982. After coaching stints in the USFL and NFL, Campbell returned to the Esks as General Manager and later would serve as President and CEO. During Campbell’s time in the front office, the Eskimos would win four more Grey Cup titles (1987, 1993, 2003, 2005). He retired in 2006.
Campbell was elected to the builder’s category of the Canadian Football Hall of Fame in 2000.
