Catching up with RB Robert Edwards

MONTREAL -- A former top NFL draft pick, running back Robert Edwards joined the Alouettes in 2005, not only resurrecting his career, but becoming a dominant force in the CFL. As a rookie, he became the first Alouettes’ back since 2002 to break 1,000 yards – a feat he repeated in 2006. He appeared in two Grey Cups with the Als before rounding out his career with the Argonauts in 2007.

Edwards also played a role in getting Alouettes management to look at his younger brother Terrence, a receiver, who not only eventually made the team, but has since established himself as a dominant receiver in the CFL.

The two were part of a very rare occurrence in 2005 when they each scored a touchdown in an Alouettes win over the Ottawa Renegades, becoming the first and only tandem of brothers to each score a major in the same game in team history.

Q: What was it like to join the Alouettes back in 2005 considering your background in the NFL and your injury?
It was a very exciting time for me because I felt my career might be over due to my injury. Thanks to Montreal, I got a second chance to continue to play the game of football on a professional level.

Q: What was the best part of your career in Montreal?
The best part for me was the first time I put that uniform on and played in my first game. At that moment I felt all the work I put forth to play again was worth it.

Q: What is your best memory of your CFL career overall?

After the fact I was able to play again at a high level would be the moment my brother joined the team. Because of the age difference, we never were able to play together. The game when we both scored is among my top five of all-time moments playing football.

Q: What are you up to now?
Right now, God is really blessing me and opening up a lot of different opportunities. I'm doing some TV stuff on CBS Atlanta and I also have a mentor program for high school and college athletes to help them to balance everyday life situations with athletics, and to help them make smart, positive choices. I've also started doing some sports talk radio and I’m doing some training programs for high school, college, and professional athletes.

Q: What's your biggest piece of advice for a former NFLer who is joining a CFL team?
The advice I have for NFLers who are joining a CFL team is simply not to underestimate the CFL game.  It’s a great game with great players that should be taken seriously and not just as a stepping stone to try to get back to the NFL.
