Kevin Glenn was the last quarterback to lead the Winnipeg Blue Bombers to the Grey Cup game. However, he was not the last quarterback to play in the game for the Bombers.
Glenn’s story is well-documented among those who follow the CFL on a regular basis. In the fourth quarter of the 2007 Eastern Final, Glenn broke his arm after attempting to recover a fumble. He would miss the Grey Cup against the Saskatchewan Roughriders – a game in which the Bombers would lose with now Riders back-up QB Ryan Dinwiddie at the helm.
Glenn remained in Winnipeg for one more season under head coach Doug Berry. The team would struggle to a record of 8-10, while Glenn lost his starting job to Dinwiddie before eventually getting it back.
The Bombers would host the Edmonton Eskimos in the Eastern Semi-Final, and Glenn completed just 44% of his passes, with the Bombers losing the game 29-21. Berry would be fired, and Glenn wouldn’t be too far behind.
Mike Kelly was hired by the Bombers that off-season to take over as the team’s head coach. In March, Glenn was cut by Kelly, ending a four and a half year reign as the starting quarterback in Winnipeg.
Glenn signed with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats 11 days later.
Although Glenn’s bitter ending in Winnipeg was nearly three years ago now, he has never been quiet about the fact that he always loves getting back at his former team.
In the final game of the 2009 regular season, Glenn and the Ticats traveled to Winnipeg to take on the Blue Bombers for what turned out to be a winner-gets-in-the-playoffs match-up. The Tiger-Cats took the Bombers to the woodshed in that game, winning 39-17 and were rewarded with a playoff spot.
That, however, was just a little bit of vindication for Glenn, as Hamilton lost to BC the following week.
On Sunday, Glenn will get his chance to do some meaningful damage to the Blue Bombers. For the first time since being cut, the Bombers and Glenn will meet in the playoffs.
In all three games this season, Glenn has thrown an interception that was returned for a touchdown. In two of those games, it was the difference in the game. The Tiger-Cats went 0-3 against the Blue Bombers in 2011.
In 10 career games against his former team, Glenn has completed 199 of 313 passes, while throwing for 2,558 yards, 18 touchdowns and 14 interceptions.
Glenn has thrown at least one interception in all but one of the ten games played against the Peg.
Needless to say, Glenn will have to be on top of his game if the Tiger-Cats are to make it to Vancouver for the Grey Cup. Despite the fact that he and back-up Quinton Porter shared reps down the stretch, it is definitely still Glenn’s team to lead.
With a trip to Vancouver and the Grey Cup on the line, you can no doubt expect that emotions will be running high.
It’s going to be cold. It’s going to be windy. It’s going to be loud. 30,000 fans will pack the stadium for what will be the final game ever played at Canad Inns Stadium. The Bombers move into their new home in 2012.
Oh, one more thing.
When Glenn was traded to Winnipeg before the 2004 season, he sat behind Bombers starter and current offensive cooordinator for the Ticats Khari Jones for the first half of the season. Jones was then traded, and Glenn became the starter.
Glenn and Jones are the last two quarterbacks to lead the Bombers to the Grey Cup game. Now, they stand beside each other on the Hamilton Tiger-Cats sideline, looking to help prevent Buck Pierce from becoming the next.
Is it Sunday yet?
