CFL Power Rankings: Week #3

TORONTO -- It’s a wacky Week 3 in the CFL Power Rankings with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers moving up to the number one spot despite losing at home to the Toronto Argonauts.

Before you folks in Saskatchewan vow to never again read the CFL Power Rankings, it is important to note that the Bombers have been the most dominant team statistically over the first two weeks of the season, save for allowing three special teams touchdowns.  The model used for the CFL Power Rankings does not account for these events since they have been far more unusual in recent years.

The other big surprise in the rankings is Montreal falling to the seventh spot. The Alouettes did win the game, but our statistical model and fans watching on TSN have noted that Montreal was a Fred Stamps drop away from 0-2.

Keep in mind that the 2010 season is young and as more stats are accumulated the model will continue to be more accurate in measuring a club’s ‘Power’.

What's more offensive?...having the longest beer cup snake and being ranked first or the ones that ranked them because they must have drank most of the beer.

I think this ranking process needs to change... it is so absurd Winnipeg #1???? They lost their last game by 21 pts! How does this compute? It is a team game and ranking should be done by team stats and points. Some power ranking for a 1-2 team???

No, I still think Winnipeg is first because they have the longest BeerCup snake.

Hey I got no problem with your rankings but I just think you calculated it wrong. Compairing SK and Win, SK has more rushing yards fewer missed field goals and given up fewer sacks. Win only has a better QB rating and not by much so no sure why the peg is first?

I happen to be a statistician with 30 years experience doing regression analyses of various sorts, and I would like to know some more detail about the model fitted to get the power rankings. This way I could get a handle on what is going wrong (and, yes, I think something is going wrong!).

First of all, what is the dependent (or outcome) variable in the fitted model, and secondly, what was the form of the data, and what was the data, that it was fitted to. Since you are starting at the beginning of the season with rank based on won-lost success, that seems to be the goal. But whether or not a team wins the entire season is not the same as whether a single game is won or lost, because THAT is highly dependent on who the opponent is and where they are in the season. I am suspicious of the idea of doing the two-part deal: subtracting the opponent's power score from the team being ranked. That is treating two dependent parts as if they are independent. Let's discuss more (offline?)

They should add something like if you lose, however many points you lost by is subtracted from your score and how ever many points you won by is added to your score

Watch for the Esks in the West this year, once they get it together. They have demonstrated that they have all the tools. Fine-tuning their mental game is still required...

I would say cfl.ca know they got it wrong thats why they ask the question who should be #1 in week 3. If the bombers can put up huge stats in games against montreal and sask and lose by a close game then i agree they move up in the rankings but not by playing the team at the bottom of the rankings.
