CALGARY -- Third-string quarterback Drew Tate threw one touchdown pass and ran for another to lead the Calgary Stampeders to a 37-30 win over the B.C. Lions in CFL pre-season action Wednesday.
Rookie receiver Jermaine Jackson hauled in a four-yard touchdown strike from Tate late in the first half. Jabari Arthur then caught an 81-yard TD pass from Matt D'Orazio, Calgary's fourth QB of the game, in the fourth quarter.
The Stamps built up a 6-0 lead in the first quarter thanks to a pair of field goals from 37 and 19 yards out by Sandro DeAngelis.
Henry Burris started at quarterback for Calgary and completed 3-of-7 passes for 42 yards before giving way to second-stringer Barrick Nealy.
Just 11 seconds into the second quarter, Nealy capped off a seven-play, 75-yard drive with a 12-yard touchdown run to put Calgary up 13-0.
Starting B.C. pivot Buck Pierce responded by engineering a seven-play, 72-yard drive, which he capped off with a 12-yard TD pass to Greg Heatherington. B.C. kicker Sean Whyte then booted field goals from 23 and 26 yards out to tie the score 13-13.
Late in the first half during a Calgary drive, Nealy went down with an apparent knee injury. Tate took over at QB and quickly found Jackson wide open in the B.C. end zone to put the Stamps up by a touchdown heading into halftime.
In the third quarter, Tate plunged into the end zone for a one-yard TD run to put the Stamps up 27-13.
Just 43 seconds into the fourth quarter, B.C. quarterback Zac Champion tossed a four-yard TD pass to rookie receiver Emmanuel Arceneaux before DeAngelis kicked his third field goal of the game from 49 yards out.
Following a 41-yard field goal by Whyte, Arthur caught a pass from D'Orazio and rambled into the end zone to put Calgary up 37-23.
The Lions refused to quit.
They pulled to within seven points when Travis Lulay, also B.C.'s fourth QB of the game, threw a 14-yard TD pass to Lyle Green.
The Lions then threatened to tie the game late, but a desperation pass by Lulay sailed through the end zone as time expired.
Notes: The Stamps will round out their exhibition schedule with a game in Regina against the Saskatchewan Roughriders next Tuesday, while the Lions host the Edmonton Eskimos in Vancouver the same night. . . . The Lions played without several veterans, including receivers Geroy Simon and Paris Jackson, kicker Paul McCallum and defensive back Barron Miles.
