EDMONTON -- Wednesday morning Edmonton City Council will determine if Commonwealth Stadium’s natural grass with be replaced with artificial turf for the upcoming 2010 season.

The $2.6 million dollar project, a cost-sharing agreement between the City and the Eskimos, would help ease maintenance expenses and would allow other events at the stadium without sacrificing the quality of the field.

“Due to challenges in ensuring field quality, along with maintenance expense, flexibility to accommodate a variety of events, rest time required by natural grass fields, and impact of inclement weather, the Edmonton Eskimos and the Community Services Department are in agreement that the natural grass field at Commonwealth Stadium should be replaced with an artificial turf field,” the report said.

I like the idea of being able to buy some sod from Stadium.I'd rather see it reused.I'd have my whole yard on my new home done in it.

I sure hope they keep the grass! It's true, many teams in the NFL have gone back to grass and it's part of the Eskimo tradition. Although I would like to have a piece of the turf for my own yard, I hope that's an option if they decide on artificial turf.

Although I have enjoyed watching the Eskies on the natural grass surface for many years, I agree with the decision to replace the surface at his time. The grass is great in the summer but ruins late season games (witness the Grey Cup in 2002). Also, artificial surfaces these days are infinatly better than they were even 10 years ago.

Absolutely a BAD idea!!! Look how many teams in the NFL who have gone back to natural turf over the last 10 years. Real turf extends players careers. It also makes for better football!
