Gibson’s Finest CFL Players of the Week

Canadian Football League Week #5

Toronto, ON -- (August 04, 2009) – DeAndra’ Cobb, Jamall Johnson, Arkee Whitlock and Chris Getzlaf were named the Gibson’s Finest CFL Players of the Week for week five, the Canadian Football League announced today.

The four players were chosen by a panel of judges that includes former Canadian Football League players Matt Dunigan and Duane Forde, now of TSN, and Pierre Vercheval of RDS.

Gibson’s Finest CFL OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK

RB – DeAndra’ Cobb – Hamilton Tiger-Cats

Highlights / Key Stats:

DeAndra’ Cobb had another excellent game against the BC Lions this week rushing for a career-high 167 yards and two touchdowns to lead the Tiger-Cats to victory. Cobb also had two receptions for 27 yards in the win.

Cobb’s second touchdown came on a 15-yard run late in the third quarter to put Hamilton up 26-18. This is the second time this season that Cobb has been recognized as the Gibson’s Finest Offensive Player of the Week.

Gibson’s Finest CFL DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK

LB – Jamall Johnson – Hamilton Tiger-Cats

BC Lions 18 @ Hamilton Tiger-Cats 30

Highlights / Key Stats:


Jamall Johnson led the way on defence for the Ticats in their win over the Lions. The former BC linebacker recorded 10 tackles, a quarterback sack and a forced fumble to help give Hamilton the season sweep over his old team.

Johnson has recorded 10 tackles in both Hamilton victories over BC this season. He currently leads the Tiger-Cats and is second in the CFL with 34 tackles this season.

Gibson’s Finest CFL SPECIAL TEAMS PLAYER OF THE WEEK

RB/KR – Arkee Whitlock – Edmonton Eskimos

Montreal Alouettes 19 @ Edmonton Eskimos 33

Highlights / Key Stats:


Arkee Whitlock played a big role in the Edmonton Eskimos 33-19 win over the previously undefeated Montreal Alouettes. Whitlock had 131 yards on 3 kick returns to set the Eskimos up with excellent field position all night. His longest return was a 65-yarder that came midway through the fourth quarter.

Gibson’s Finest CFL CANADIAN PLAYER OF THE WEEK

SB – Chris Getzlaf – Saskatchewan Roughriders

Saskatchewan Roughriders 24 @ Calgary Stampeders 23

Highlights / Key Stats:


Chris Getzlaf caught five passes for 101 yards and two touchdowns to lead the Riders to a 24-23 comeback victory over the Calgary Stampeders. His second touchdown came on a 65-yard reception late in the fourth quarter to give the Riders the win. Getzlaf started in place of the injured Andy Fantuz.
