TORONTO –- Jon Cornish, Ricky Foley and Troy Stoudermire were named the Canadian Football League Players of the Week for Week 10 of the 2014 Canadian Football League season.
The three players were chosen by a panel of judges including: former Canadian Football League players Matt Dunigan and Duane Forde of TSN, and Pierre Vercheval of RDS.
Calgary Stampeders running back Jon Cornish was named the Offensive and Canadian Player of the Week for Week 10. Cornish rushed for a season-high 163 yards and added a touchdown in the Stampeders’ 28-13 win over the second place Eskimos. The former University of Kansas Jayhawk’s productive Labour Day performance also garnered him Canadian Player of the Week honours.
Cornish, playing in only his third game of the season, showed off the form that led to him winning the league’s 2013 Most Outstanding Player award. He carried the ball 17 times and averaged 9.6 yards per carry in the annual clash between the two provincial rivals.
Cornish also punched in a three-yard touchdown in the final quarter to give the Stampeders a two possession advantage.
In his three games this season, the native of New Westminster, B.C. has rushed for 304 yards, averaging 6.5 yards per carry, while running in a pair of touchdowns. He has added six receptions for 53 yards this season.
This is Cornish’s first Player of the Week honour this season.
Saskatchewan Roughriders defensive end Ricky Foley was named the Defensive Player of the Week for Week 10. Foley notched a pair of sacks, added a tackle, and forced and recovered a fumble to spur the Riders to their sixth straight victory.
Foley not only powered his way to Drew Willy for the sack, but also stripped the ball from the Bombers’ quarterback, resulting in the Riders’ forcing a turnover early in the second half. The Courtice, Ontario native’s big defensive play set the stage for Anthony Allen’s touchdown seven plays later which extended the Riders’ lead to 21-7.
The product of York University is currently tied for fourth in the league in sacks with seven and is on pace to surpass his single-season career-high of 12 set in the 2009 campaign.
This is Foley’s second Defensive Player of the Week honour this season with his first coming in Week 1.
Winnipeg Blue Bombers kick and punt returner Troy Stoudermire was named the Special Teams Player of the Week for Week 10. Stoudermire returned a Josh Bartel punt 64 yards untouched for a touchdown in the Blue Bombers’ 35-30 road loss to the Roughriders.
In the game, Stoudermire recorded 224 combined return yards.
The all-time kickoff return yards leader at the University of Minnesota returned four punts for 71 yards (averaging 17.8 yards) and seven kickoffs for 153 yards (averaging 21.9 yards)in the tilt.
The 5'10" 199 pound native of Dallas, Texas currently sits sixth the league in combined return yards with 659.
This is Stoudermire’s first season in the CFL and his first Player of the Week honour.
