Eskimos stymie Roughriders to close out pre-season | | Official Site of the Canadian Football League

REGINA -- Second-string quarterback Matt Nichols threw for 155 yards and a touchdown to help upset the Saskatchewan Roughriders 19-14 Friday in the final pre-season game for both teams.

Rookie running back Tyler Thomas paced the Eskimos with 95 yards rushing on 12 carries, while John White, another rookie running back pushing for Hugh Charles' starting job, ran for a total of 57 yards on four rushes and a touchdown.

White's 41-yard touchdown burst gave the Eskimos a 16-14 lead midway through the third quarter. White also had one catch for 22 yards.

Charles started and had two catches for 13 yards.

Nichols ignited the Edmonton offence in the second half. Battling Jonathan Crompton for a backup spot behind starter Mike Reilly, Nichols found veteran slotback Adarius Bowman on a 20-yard flag pattern in the back of the end zone for Edmonton's first touchdown of the third quarter.

Nichols completed eight of 11 passes and Reilly added 60 yards on nine of 11 pass attempts.

Saskatchewan quarterback Darian Durant threw for 113 yards and two touchdowns.

Durant found wideout Taj Smith in the end zone twice in the first half, on scoring plays that covered 25 yards and 39 yards. The veteran QB was seven for 11 passing.

Keith Toston led the defending Grey Cup champion Roughriders in rushing with 67 yards on seven carries.

The Riders' offence is looking to fill the vacancies left by running back Kory Sheets, and receivers Weston Dressler and Geroy Simon.

Edmonton opens the regular season in B.C. on June 28 while Saskatchewan hosts Hamilton on June 29.

3RD and 1
Actually when the #1's were in the game the EE couldnt move the ball and Darian moved the ball at will. It was 14-0 SK starters over the EE starters. When the other QB's were played in the 3rd and 4th Qtr and the #2's were in. That's the only time the EE could move the ball and score. During regular season the EE will be absolutely no problem.

3RD and 1: Two things to ponder. Did you ever consider that perhaps EE was not playing their "full hand" during this game? Most teams don't during preseason in order to keep other teams off balance when the games that mean something (regular season) begin! Secondly, Because EE won the game using their #2's, what does that say about SK #2's? Sounds like a lack of depth to me ... better hope SK does not lose their #1's to injury during the season. It might not bode so well for them. Just a few things to keep in mind before anointing SK as the team to beat.

Two more things to ponder.
One: Did you consider the possibility that, like EE, SK wasn't showing their full hand? Why would Chamblin not have read the same script??
Two: SK had a lot less returning #1s as champs took advantage of their inflated FA value; As some 2013 #2s found #1 spots, SK's #2s would be newer to the SK playbook than EE #2s that are still waiting.
Besides all that, unless disaster strikes only one of those two teams, the #2s will only fill a few spots and it will be starters against starters - in which case, SK showed the upper hand in that game!
