Esks' LB Sherritt won't face Ticats on Friday | | Official Site of the Canadian Football League Staff

EDMONTON -- The Edmonton Eskimos will be without one of their top defensive weapons when they take on the Tiger-Cats on Friday night, as the team announced JC Sherritt will not play due to an injured knee he suffered last week vs. the Calgary Stampeders.

Rookie linebacker Simoni Lawrence will get the start in his place.

The announcement comes just one day after Sherritt said he hopes to play in Week 15.

Sherritt, 24, appears to be the front-runner for defensive player of the year honours, with a league-high 104 tackles to go with three sacks, three interceptions, and one recovered fumble. He was named the Defensive Player of the Month earlier Wednesday, the third time he's been given the award this season.

His absence in the lineup could prove costly for the Esks on Friday, as they look to end a five-game losing streak in a game that has major playoff implications.

“It’s always the worst feeling to watch the guys go out there and you can’t help them,” says Sherritt. “I don’t think there is a worse feeling in sports, so I’m just doing what I can to get it healthy and get ready.”

Lawrence, meanwhile, has played in 10 games this season, registering eight defensive tackles, eight special teams tackles and one fumble recovery. He spent the first two games, as well as the eighth game of the season on the 1-game injured list.

J C Sherritt's absence should make tilt things a little in the Ti-Cat's favor but I'd hate to see him sidelined for long because he's such a good player and a lot of fun to watch.

Sherritt out of the line up. Leagues leading tackler by a mile, and REED controlling the offensive huddle. Game has major ramifications on Edmonton's cross-over plan.

All this while on a 5 game slide.

Glad to see Kavis making some decisions. Joseph as #1 man - good call, he's the best they have. Jyles as #3 - equally good. Charles and Messam in the backfield - good.
Strange that Boyd will probably be looking for work - again - when earlier he was the league's leading rusher?!!

Ah yes but most of Boyd`s yards to vault him into top spot were in one game - against the Ticats! However he does seem to be the odd man out. Edmonton jumped to sign him even though they knew there was a chance that Messam would be returning.
Just wondering - isn`t it the job of the coach to make decisions lol!

Sherritt or not, Ticats will have to be on like they were for Montreal last week so they can take this game which I do think is winnable for them.

Avon Couborne went on 3rd and long and said as long as Sherrit isn't there the outcome of the game looks good. Perfect....
