EDMONTON -- The Edmonton Eskimos have signed University of Toronto defensive back Hugo Lopez, the club’s second round selection (14th overall) in the 2011 CFL Canadian Draft.

Lopez played three years at Waterloo (2007 – 2009) before transferring to the U of T for his final season.  He posted 22 tackles and 1 interception last year for the Varsity Blues.

"We're excited to have Hugo officially join our club," said Eskimo General Manager Eric Tillman. "With his size and speed, he brings terrific versatility and he’ll get a chance to compete at cornerback, safety and linebacker in training camp.

"We fully expect Hugo to have a positive impact on our special teams."

Lopez, who also competed in the 60 metre hurdles while at Waterloo, was born in Leon, Nicaragua. He has also lived in Costa Rica and Naples, Florida where he started playing football.
