Expansion Draft: Round 1 Selections

CFL.ca Staff

OTTAWA -- Kevin Glenn is an Ottawa REDBLACK.

Monday, the quarterback was selected by the CFL’s newest team in the first round of the 2013 Expansion Draft.

Ottawa GM Marcel Desjardins said he took the top two quarterbacks available.

"It became a function of having two guys that we felt were the best quarterbacks available that were not going to be free agents,'' he said. "That's a key component for us.

"Obviously Kevin is very familiar with what we're going to want to do offensively, which is a bonus. And we also have a combination of veteran leadership and younger players so we have all the elements in place that we think are going to help us be a strong team, specifically at that position.''

Round 1 Picks: QB Kevin Glenn (CGY) | QB Thomas DeMarco (QB) | RB Chevon Walker (HAM) | DL Jonathan Williams (TOR) | DL Moton Hopkins (MTL) | WR Wallace Miles (WPG) | OL James Lee (SSK) | WR Carleton Mitchell (EDM)... View Draft Tracker.

Glenn heads to Ottawa after another impressive campaign in 2013, one that saw him help lead the Stampeders to 14 wins and a berth in the Western Final.

In 15 games last year, Glenn completed 67 per cent of his passes for 2,710 yards, 18 touchdowns and seven interceptions.

The 34 year-old returns to the CFL’s East Division for the first time since 2011 before he was traded to Calgary in exchange for fellow quarterback Henry Burris.

The 2014 season will be the 14th of Glenn’s career. In stints with Saskatchewan, Winnipeg, Hamilton and Calgary, Glenn has thrown for an impressive 39,418 yards, 222 touchdowns and 151 interceptions.

His career QB rating is 90.3.

Thomas DeMarco is exchanging his orange and black for some red and black.

Seeing a lot of action due to an injury to Travis Lulay in 2013, DeMarco displayed glimpses of a quarterback who can one day manage an offence on a full-time basis.

In five starts, DeMarco completed 55 per cent of his passes for 1,112 yards and eight touchdowns.

Chevon Walker bursts onto the scene in Hamilton in 2012, carrying the ball 118 times for 656 and four touchdowns. He also added 27 receptions for 336 yards and 4 majors.  In 2013, CJ Gable took over Walker's spot in the Hamilton backfield as he played limited reps, primarily on kick returns.

Wallace Miles hauled in 16 passes for 193 yards and 1 major in two seasons with Winnipeg albiet in limited action.

Jonathan Williams moved in and out of the starting lineup along Toronto's defensive in his rookie year while Moton Hopkins returned from a significant injury to work his way back into the Montreal lineup.  Last year the Tulsa graduate racked up 15 tackles and 1 sack.

RedBlacks could of passed on the the QBs and loaded up on the other positions either import or non import. On Feb. 15th then go after the free agent QBs to fill that position and be better off for it. The young QBs would of jumped at this opportunity vs staying as a non starter elsewhere. The best QB not taken in my opinion was the 3rd string guy from Pitt for the Riders. He was lights out when given the chance in preseason and blew the competition away real quick

Thanks for giving us two great years, Kevin, including a Grey Cup appearance. Hopefully, the starting quarterback debate is now behind you.

Good on Ottawa! They got the best of the 3 QBs in Calgary. He was only left unprotected due to his age. But why DeMarco, were no other QBs available???

Good luck to KG at Ottawa. He actually seems to be improving with age overall.

Glenn? Me thinks there was a back room deal done here with Calgary. It will show up at a later date in some kind of weird trade later.

Interesting to note that a team who has yet to run their first play in the league, already has MUCH BETTER quarterbacking than the Blue Bombers.

A lot of young players here. Interesting.

You could almost hear the 'WHO?' in Saskatchewan when James Lee was picked.

Hah, so true. I had to do some research and we just picked him up a couple months ago. He looks promising though and might have been another Xavier Fulton -- we will see next year!
