The Freak Report

Greetings CFFL'ers,

Well the big CFL news this week is the promotion of Marcel Bellefeuille in Hamilton and the hiring of Don Matthews in Toronto. Will Matthews turn the Argos offense into a powerhouse? I don't think this hiring will have any real fantasy relevance... unless Don Matthews brings a RB with him.

Regardless of what this change will mean to the Hamilton franchise, will it have any impact in the world of Fantasy? I think not. The only person that will impact the fantasy-relevance of the Ticat players is the doctor treating Jesse Lumsden's ankle. When healthy, he has the potential to put up huge numbers and with the unproductive and confusing backfield situations in Winnipeg and Toronto matched with the injury problem facing Montreal's Avon Coburne, a healthy Lumsden would definitely be a factor out East... Kenton Keith anyone? Anyone?

Anthony Calvillo. The dude is ridiculous. He just can't be stopped. Unless the Als lock up 1st place in the East in the next few weeks, he's gonna be hard to sit.

Out West, the Bishop-to-Dressler show has officially hit the top of the charts. Is there a more explosive duo right now in the league? After a pretty average Labour Day Classic game in Regina, Bishop came out and put up 370 yards and three TD's this week against the Bombers with Dressler hauling in two of those majors. It's kinda funny what a decent running game can do to a QB's success in the CFL eh? I like Bishop and Dressler to keep putting up the points for the Roughies BUT Ricky Ray is still the man in my books.

Good luck this week Freaks!

Fantasy Freak of the Week

QB – Anthony Calvillo – Montreal – 48 Points

I really wanted to give the Freak of the Week to Cam Wake (22 Points, 4 sacks) or Dominique Dorsey (35 Points, 300 combined yards, kick return TD) but AC’s numbers are simply too good. 36 Completions for 370 yards with three touchdowns, and a rushing touchdown? Come on AC, give the rest of the East a chance here.

Top Quarterbacks

Anthony Calvillo – Montreal – 48 Points
Michael Bishop – Saskatchewan – 41 Points
Henry Burris – Calgary – 34 Points

Bishop had his best game as a Rider, and maybe his best game as a CFLer. Bishop was on the mark all game long completing on 80% of his throws, racking up 370 yards, three TD’s and 56 yards on the ground. If he keeps that up he might meet his competition for Freak of the Week in late November.

Top Running Backs

A.J. Harris – Edmonton – 28 Points
Wes Cates – Saskatchewan – 19 Points
Joe Smith – Winnipeg – 9 Points

Slow week for running backs this week, probably because the QB’s just kept throwing and throwing. AJ Harris has become one of Ricky Ray’s go-to receivers out of the backfield and led the league with 11 catches this week for 147 yards. If he had made it into the endzone it would have been a huge week for him. Smith and Roberts are still trying to work their way into their new team’s lineups and should have a bigger impact this week, especially Roberts.

Top Receivers

Wes Dressler – Saskatchewan – 30 Points
Kerry Watkins – Montreal – 24 Points
Ben Cahoon – Montreal – 22 Points

Anthony Calvillo complete to Kerry Watkins/Ben Cahoon is a sound that must torment Argo fans this week. Watkins went for eight catches, 108 yards and a touchdown while Cahoon caught 11 for 110. Dressler has become one of the best playmakers in the league and his two TD’s were crucial in Saskatchewan’s comeback win.

Top Defenders

Cam Wake – B.C. – 22 Points
JoJuan Armour – Calgary – 9 Points
Zeke Moreno – Hamilton; Javier Glatt, B.C. – 8 Points

Cam Wake is a BEAST. Many consider him to be not just the best defensive end in the CFL, but the best player at any position. Wake had four sacks against Hamilton, and it feels like he could have sacked the QB on every play. When he is on it is virtually impossible to stop the man. Moreno should benefit from a change of scenery and some big bodies like Doug Brown in front of him taking away linemen.

Top Kicker

Noel Prefontaine – Edmonton – 14 Points
Paul McCallum – B.C. – 14 Points

Prefontaine is still an elite CFL kicker and the move at the beginning of the season to replace him with Mike Vanderjagt isn’t exactly panning out too well, although Vanderjagt has been consistent. McCallum is one of the best dual role kickers in the league and was dead on this week going 4/4 on field goals and 3/3 on converts.

Top Special Teams

Dominique Dorsey – Toronto – 35 Points

Dominique Dorsey continues to have one of the best seasons in the history of the CFL despite playing on a 4-6 team that is struggling on offence. He is on pace for 3,918 combined yards which would be a CFL record. He is such a threat on offence, punts, kicks and missed field goals that it is a wonder teams continue to kick to him.
