Gibson’s Finest CFL Players of the Week

Canadian Football League Week #16


Toronto, ON – (October 20, 2009) – Kevin Glenn, Stevie Baggs, Jason Armstead and Andy Fantuz were named the Gibson’s Finest CFL Players of the Week for week 16, the Canadian Football League announced today.

The four players were chosen by a panel of judges that includes former Canadian Football League players Matt Dunigan and Duane Forde, now of TSN, and Pierre Vercheval of RDS.

Gibson’s Finest CFL OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK

QB – Kevin Glenn – Hamilton Tiger-Cats

Highlights / Key Stats:

Kevin Glenn had a career-best performance in the Tiger-Cats’ narrow loss to the Alouettes this weekend, as he became the first player to throw for more than 500 yards since Jason Maas threw for 540 yards in 2004 with the Edmonton Eskimos.

In the game, Glenn threw for 506 yards on 29 of 44 completions, including three touchdowns, two to Marquay McDaniel and one to Arland Bruce III. Glenn’s 506 passing yards ranks 27th on the CFL’s all-time yardage list.

Gibson’s Finest CFL DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK

DE – Stevie Baggs – Saskatchewan Roughriders

Saskatchewan Roughriders 44 @ Calgary Stampeders 44

Highlights / Key Stats:


Saskatchewan defensive end Stevie Baggs led the way for the Roughriders defence in their tie with Calgary this week. Baggs seemed to apply constant pressure on Henry Burris and the Stamps offence recording seven tackles, including two sacks and two tackles for losses, as well as a forced fumble in the 44-44 tie.

With the two sacks Baggs now has 11 for the season. He is tied with BC’s Ricky Foley for the league lead in the category. 

This is the third time Baggs has won the Gibson’s Finest CFL Defensive Player of the Week award this season (Week 1, Week 8).

Gibson’s Finest CFL SPECIAL TEAMS PLAYER OF THE WEEK

WR/KR – Jason Armstead – Saskatchewan Roughriders

Saskatchewan Roughriders 44 @ Calgary Stampeders 44

Highlights / Key Stats:

Jason Armstead had a great day returning kicks for the Saskatchewan Roughriders in their big game against the Calgary Stampeders this week. Armstead constantly set the Riders up with good field position averaging 29 yards per return on five kick returns for 145 yards total.

Armstead’s best return was a 49-yarder in the second quarter that helped set up the Riders’ first touchdown of the game. He also had four punt returns for a total of 25 yards.

Gibson’s Finest CFL CANADIAN PLAYER OF THE WEEK

SB – Andy Fantuz – Saskatchewan Roughriders

Highlights / Key Stats:


Andy Fantuz had an excellent day for the Riders in their 44-44 tie against the Stampeders, leading the team in both receptions and receiving yards. Fantuz finished the game with 10 catches for 149 yards and a touchdown.

With only one minute to play and the Riders trailing by eight, Fantuz caught a 25-yard touchdown pass from Darian Durant to set up the game tying two-point conversion.

It was the first 100-yard receiving game of the season for Fantuz. This is the second time Fantuz has been named Gibson’s Finest CFL Canadian Player of the Week award this season. He was also recognized in Week 13.
