TORONTO – Andrew Harris, Almondo Sewell and Jock Sanders were named the Canadian Football League Players of the Week for Week 3 of the 2014 Canadian Football League season.
The three players were chosen by a panel of judges including: former Canadian Football League players Matt Dunigan and Duane Forde of TSN, and Pierre Vercheval of RDS.
BC Lions running back Andrew Harris was named Offensive and Canadian Player of the Week for Week 3. Harris rushed for 138 yards on 18 touches and scored a touchdown, to give the BC Lions their first win of the year on the road against the Saskatchewan Roughriders, 26-13.
The native of Winnipeg, Manitoba and Vancouver Island Raiders product also caught five passes for a team-high 65 yards. Harris finished the game with 232 all-purpose yards.
Harris scored his second touchdown of the season by finding a seam and adding a great second-effort to score on a 58-yard run that gave the Lions a 11-0 lead late in the first quarter.
This is Harris’ first Player of the Week award this season and the first time in his career that he has been named Offensive Player of the Week. In his career, Harris has been named Canadian Player of the Week seven times and once as Special Teams Player of the Week.
Edmonton Eskimos defensive tackle Almondo Sewell was named the Defensive Player of the Week for Week 3. Sewell recorded four tackles, including sacking Ottawa REDBLACKS quarterback Henry Burris a career-high three times in the Eskimos win over the REDBLACKS, 27-11.
The 6’4” 288 lbs defensive tackle from Buff Bay, Jamaica and standout from Akron ranks first in the CFL with five sacks and has accumulated 10 tackles this season.
Sewell also added a special teams tackle in the win.
This is Sewell’s first Player of the Week award in his career.
Calgary Stampeders kick returner Jock Sanders was named the Special Teams Player of the Week for Week 3. Sanders returned Swayze Waters’s missed field goal for 121 yards to set up a Jeff Fuller touchdown in his team’s 34-15 win over the Toronto Argonauts.
Sanders, a native of St. Petersburg, Florida and West Virginia product, returned three punts for 34 yards and also returned a kickoff for 19 yards.
The 5’7” returner is currently fourth in the league in combined return yards with 278 through two games.
This is the second time Sanders has been awarded Special Teams Player of the Week, the first coming in Week 2 last season.
