SASKATOON -- Bryce McCall, who plays safety, has been a heavy hitter in three seasons with the University of Saskatchewan Huskies. Now he is closing in on a record.

McCall has 16 career interceptions, putting him five behind the CIS record of 21 interceptions shared by Matt Carapella of Western Ontario, Peter McMabb, who played for both Toronto and Queen’s, and former Saskatchewan Huskie Bob Coffin.

McCall had five interceptions as a rookie with the Huskies, seven in his second season and four last year. He is also consistently among the leaders on the team in tackles. He is a defender the opposition notices. And after being named both a conference all-star and a CIS All-Canadian at safety in 2010 – he will turn some heads.

“It’s always good to have an All-Canadian back in your line up,” said Huskie head coach Brian Towriss. “He is a leader on defence and leads by example on and off the field. He is a very physical player, a tremendous hitter and just an all-around great student-athlete.”

This summer, McCall was on the Canadian team that won a silver medal at the first IFAF world senior football championship in Graz, Austria. In May, he was in the East-West Bowl Game in London, Ont., a showcase for players eligible for the 2011 CFL draft.

McCall became the starting safety for the Huskies in 2008 after playing two seasons with the Regina Thunder in the Prairie Football Conference. He was the PFC rookie of the year in 2006.

Awards & honours: 2010 Canada West conference all-star at safety, 2010 CIS All-Canadian at safety.
