Mistake costs Roughriders the Cup

CALGARY -- Delight turned to desolation for the Saskatchewan Roughriders as an on-field mistake cost them a Grey Cup championship Sunday.

Leading 27-25 in the final minute, the Roughriders began celebrating a CFL title when Alouettes kicker Damon Duval missed a 43-yard field goal attempt with no time remaining.

But penalty flags flew as the ball sailed wide. Saskatchewan was called for too many men, which gave Duval another chance from 33 yards this time. The Montreal kicker did not miss his second chance.

Saskatchewan watched in disbelief as the Als ran onto the field to celebrate at 28-27 victory.

"The disappointment of this loss is going to affect us as long as we're on this planet," said an emotional head coach Ken Miller said after the game.

"Total 100 per cent disappointment."

The Roughriders sent an extra lineman onto the field for the second field goal attempt to try and block it, but failed to take another player off.

Special teams co-ordinator Kavis Reed took responsibility for the gaffe and refused to say which player should have come off.

"The player's name is not important," Reed said. "What's important is that a mistake was made and ultimately I think I'm responsible for that mistake.

"It was not a heat-of-the moment thing. I was going through the mechanics of counting. I asked people to verify the count and that mistake was made.

"Guys going on the field are communicating to the guys coming off the field that we're running the play. You communicate going on the field that we're running the block. Those guys who are not on that team know to come off. Obviously someone didn't get that."

The Roughriders took over the Calgary Stampeders' dressing room upon their arrival in the city and it was nearly silent after Sunday's game. A few players stood facing their lockers for some time before heading to the showers.

"I'm not going to lie to you. It's unbelievable right now," returner Jason Armstead said. "You've got to play four quarters until that last tick is off the clock."

Ironically, Saskatchewan was the least penalized team in the CFL this season.

"My stomach is still turning because I thought we won the game," said defensive end Stevie Baggs. "I was like 'oh my goodness, we won' and then I see flags on the carpet and wondering what's going on.

"Until we see the film we don't even know who the extra man was."

Montreal was favoured to win the 97th Grey Cup after posting a 15-3 regular-season record and dominating the B.C. Lions 56-18 in the East Division final.

Saskatchewan went 10-7-1 and defeated the Stampeders 27-17 in the West final. The 'Riders hoped their inexperienced quarterback Darian Durant would rise to the occasion and that the team would be elevated by the sea of green-clad fans in the stands.

That did happen for much of the game. Durant, playing in his first Grey Cup, ran for a touchdown and threw another. He held his own against Montreal counterpart Anthony Calvillo, who was making his seventh appearance in a CFL final.

Durant completed 17 of 29 passes for 201 yards and ran for another 57.

The good work of three quarters came undone in the fourth, however. Saskatchewan led 17-3 at the half and 20-10 after three quarters, but Montreal scored 18 points in the fourth quarter.

"It's a tough feeling. It's hard to describe. It really is," said Durant. "You have to look forward to next year. It's going to be a tough one to swallow, but time heals all wounds. It's going to take a little time. It's a little added motivation to come back and get it right."

While the penalty will be the talk of the game for years to come, Jerald Brown's interception of Durant in the fourth quarter led to a Montreal touchdown that allowed the Als to pull within two points.

The CFL's best defensive lineman this season said the Grey Cup began slipping away before the last minute of the game.

I find it a little far feched to blame Jason armstead as the 13th. man. With no one back there, and the ball is pooched or hits the goalpost, falling into the endzone? They would have an equalchance to recover the ball for a touchdown as the Riders

After the Als closed the gap to 27-25, Sask. should have taken the ball on their 35 instead of receiving the kickoff. The 'Rider field position after the kickoff was quite bad.

In my opinion Riders won the game and Als won the cup. Hold your heads high riders you have nothing to be sad about.

Well you guys would have never scored that touchdown becuase when (I think it was Lucas or frazier) blocked the pass and your o-line pushed Baggs from behind before he intercepted it and that should have been ileagal contact or something like that because we would have go the ball back. Montreal did not win the Grey Cup the Riders lost it. Also note that all the refs were from eastrn canada and had french names what does that tell you. Maybe they should get refs from both sides so it's not so unfair

I am always amazed how every football player gets into college and yet they make some really stupid mistakes that a minor football player shouldn't make...

It's hard for me to believe -- I'd accept it more if it was 58-27; but it shows that mental errors are costly.

bottom line.... roughriders should have gone for td at end of first half instead of settling for the field goal... i knew that would come back to haunt them... saskatchewan was outcoached NOT outplayed!

After those 2 botched punts, I almost took off my Duval jersey, assuming my body odor was somehow jinxing him. Now I'm real glad I kept it on! I'm still having a hard time taking in Montreal's win... this was a spectacular ending that I'll be re-living for the rest of my life.

I feel really bad for the roughriders. They played a tremendous game. The alouettes did not play a very good game, especially the first half. Let's face it guys ... you were pretty bad. But, you never gave up and got a lucky break and took advantage of it. We've lost grey cup games we "should have won" and tonight won one we probably should have lost. Hey, that's sports.
