WINNIPEG -- The Winnipeg Blue Bombers announced a trio of signings on Tuesday, adding receiver Mike Sims-Walker to the active roster, while inking imports Aaron Kelly and Jason Boltus to the practice roster.
“Mike is a very experienced receiver who we feel possesses great skill that could allow him to excel on our wide-open fields in Canada,” said Acting General Manager of the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, Kyle Walters. “We're looking forward to getting him acclimated to the CFL game.”
Sims-Walker was selected by the Jacksonville Jaguars in the third round (79th overall) of the 2007 NFL Draft following a standout collegiate career that saw him record 184 receptions for 2,561 yards in 46 games.
Twice named an All-Conference USA selection, he set the school's all-time record for receptions in a season when he recorded 90 in his senior year.
After sitting out his rookie season in Jacksonville due to injury, Sims-Walker recorded 122 receptions over the next three seasons for 1,648 yards and 14 touchdowns before spending time with the St. Louis Rams in 2011.
He was released by the Rams in October after catching 11 passes for 139 yards and returned to Jacksonville that season but suffered a season-ending injury in November.
Kelly spent the last two seasons with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats, starting eight games in his rookie year in 2011 and catching 27 passes for 383 yards and two touchdowns. Last season, Kelly played in six games and recorded 11 receptions for 107 yards and one touchdown. He was released prior to this year’s training camp.
At Clemson, Kelly registered 2,733 receiving yards and set the all-time ACC reception record after hauling in 232 passes. He also set school records in receptions and touchdowns (20) as well as single-season records for receptions (88) and touchdowns (11) in 2007.
Boltus spent three seasons with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats from 2009-2011, suiting up as the third-string quarterback in his final season and completing five of 15 passes for 48 yards.
He spent last season with the Omaha Nighthawks of the United Football League and also suited up for the Utah Blaze of the Arena Football League. Boltus played four seasons at Hartwick College completing 801 of 1,467 passes for 13,276 yards and 134 touchdowns and left the school as Division III’s all-time leader in total offence.
The Bombers also released import receiver Isaac Anderson and non-import kicker Justin Palardy and have added kicker Brody McKnight to their practice roster.
Anderson was in his second season with the team and caught 21 passes for 244 yards in seven games played.
Palardy originally joined the Blue Bombers midway through the 2010 season following his release from the Hamilton Tiger-Cats. He has connected on 114 of 139 field goals over the course of his four-year career.
McKnight was selected in the first round (8th overall) by the Montreal Alouettes in 2011 and has since spent time with the Als, the Edmonton Eskimos, the Saskatchewan Roughriders and the Hamilton Tiger-Cats. In four seasons at Montana, McKnight connected on 59 of 87 field goals while also averaging 40.7 yards per punt.
