EDMONTON – After sustaining a serious ankle injury in last season's Eastern Semi-Final, Edmonton Eskimos quarterback Matt Nichols has taken the next step in his pursuit to return stronger than ever in 2013.

Nichols underwent a successful surgery on February 7 to remove a screw from his left ankle. He is recovering on schedule and is projected to fully participate in training camp this June.  Nichols dislocated the ankle on November 11 during the third quarter of the Eastern Semi-Final against the Toronto Argonauts.

“Our medical staff is monitoring Matt closely and feels confident he will be ready to compete in training camp,” Eskimos head coach Kavis Reed said in a statement.

Nichols had entered the game in relief of Kerry Joseph.  Heading into the playoffs, Nichols stepped up for the Esks in the final third of the season, completing 48 of 83 passes for 884 yards and 7 touchdowns.  He also ran 10 times for 76 yards and one major.

Will he be able to play at as high a level or be as mobile after such a tough injury?

As mobile? Hmm. You know, when Ricky was here, he was criticized for not being mobile. (Criticism should have been directed at OC/Coaching.) Then we had Jyles starting, then Joseph, then... Nichols, who everyone said was going to be the saviour, but is the LEAST MOBILE of the three 2012 QB's! Sometimes irony can be pretty ironic...

At least Edmonton has 2 decent QB's and a capable journeyman in the wings. Montreal is one hit away from disaster. Porter is a so-so backup, not a starter.

AC is strongr than we think and porter is jut a formality, for before we know it, kyle quinlan will be running the show!! (once calvillo steps down) its just cuzz hes a rookie that we put porter between both the present and future mtl leaders! als fans = no worries... we never do!!!

I wouldn't want to be an Al's fan with father time behind center. Nichols will be good this year. He should have played more last year.
