TORONTO -- Chad Owens, Ahmad Carroll, Chris Williams and Jon Cornish were named the Gibson’s Finest CFL Players of the Week for Week 10, the Canadian Football League announced today.
The four players were chosen by a panel of judges that includes former Canadian Football League players Matt Dunigan and Duane Forde, now of TSN, and Pierre Vercheval of RDS.
Following his milestone-filled Labour Day Monday, Toronto Argonauts receiver/kick returner Chad Owens is the Week 10 Offensive Player of the Week.
Owens was dominant all through Toronto’s 33-30 win over the Tiger-Cats in Hamilton, finishing the outing with 402 combined yards, which marked the third best single-game performance in CFL history.
The third-year Argo hauled in 11 passes for 176 yards and one touchdown, including a critical one-handed catch over the middle with less than three minutes remaining to extend Toronto’s game-winning drive.
Owens’ historical Labour Day performance helped him earn his fist 2012 Player of the Week award in a thrilling Battle of Ontario at Ivor Wynne Stadium.
Owens wasn’t the only Argonaut honoured for his performance in Week 10, as defensive back Ahmad Carroll was named the Defensive Player of the Week.
Carroll registered one tackle, and added an interception that he returned 37 yards for a touchdown with under eight minutes remaining in the fourth quarter.
Carroll’s solid day was good enough to earn him his first 2012 Player of the Week award.
For the fourth time this season, the Special Teams Player of the Week is Hamilton’s Chris Williams.
Williams made history on Monday, returning a punt 82 yards to the endzone for his sixth kick return touchdown this season – a new CFL record.
The record was previously held by Henry ‘Gizmo’ Williams, Bashir Levingston and Keith Stokes, who all registered five.
The Canadian Player of the Week is Calgary running back Jon Cornish.
The New Westminster, BC native compiled 71 yards on 13 carries and 23 yards and one touchdown on four receptions in the Stamperders’ 31-30 win over the Edmonton Eskimos.
Cornish was a reliable force in Calgary’s see-saw victory, earning his second-straight Canadian Player of the Week award in the process.
