TORONTO -- Cory Boyd, Chip Cox, Yonus Davis and Kevin Eiben were named the Gibson’s Finest CFL Players of the Month for August, the Canadian Football League announced today.
The four players were chosen by a panel of judges that includes former Canadian Football League players Matt Dunigan and Duane Forde, now of TSN, and Pierre Vercheval of RDS.
Cory Boyd was the driving force on offence and emerged as a breakthrough performer in August while leading the Toronto Argonauts to a solid 2-1 record. Boyd was spectacular on his 25th birthday in week six, amassing 164 yards on 25 rushing attempts and two touchdowns to go along with four receptions for 46 yards and one receiving TD. Over three games in August, the first-year Argo ran the ball 58 times for 308 rushing yards and three touchdowns. Boyd added eight receptions for 78 receiving yards and one TD, totaling 386 yards from scrimmage for an average of 128.7 yards per game during the month.
Boyd currently leads the CFL in rushing yards (792) and yards from scrimmage (894). The Toronto running back has now rushed for 100 yards in four games this season, accomplishing the feat once during the month of August.
Ticats receiver Arland Bruce III was named runner up.
Chip Cox was superb in August, leading the Alouettes on defence and helping them regain sole position of first place in the East division. Three games in August saw Cox collect 20 tackles, two special teams’ tackles, two interceptions, two passes defended, one sack, one tackle-for-loss, and one fumble recovery for a 14-yard defensive touchdown.
The Als linebacker currently leads the club with 40 tackles and is tied for the team lead with two interceptions through eight games in 2010.
Cox was also named Gibson’s Finest CFL Defensive Player of the Week for weeks six and eight.
Lions newcomer Yonus Davis has provided instant offence on special teams since joining the club. In August, the return specialist increased his production in each of the three games he played, compiling 111, 161, and 225 total return yards respectively.
Over three games in August, Davis tallied 497 total return yards for an average of 165.7 yards per game. The explosive return man recorded 370 yards on kickoff returns, 118 on punts, and 9 on missed field goals during that span.
Davis currently ranks eleventh in the league for combined yards with 764, despite having only played in half of BC’s eight games this season. That total includes 483 yards on kickoff returns, 140 on punts, 108 rushing, 32 on missed field goals, and 1 receiving.
Tim Maypray of the Montreal Alouettes and Calgary’s Karl McCartney were named runners up.
Kevin Eiben has played a major role in reversing the fortunes of the Toronto Argonauts this season. Despite not winning Gibson’s Finest CFL Canadian Player of the Week yet this season, Eiben’s consistent play week in and week out has earned him the monthly honour for August. The Toronto linebacker helped his team to 2-1 record while racking up 23 tackles, two special teams’ tackles, one tackle-for-loss, and one pass defended.
Eiben currently leads the CFL with 53 tackles in 2010 and sits in second place on the Argos’ all-time list with 639 career tackles, trailing only Mike O’Shea (822).
The Delta, British Columbia native is currently in his tenth CFL season, all as a member of the Argos.
Calgary running back Jon Cornish was named runner up.
