OTTAWA -- The Ottawa REDBLACKS announced today that quarterback Jesse Mills of the Carleton Ravens and quarterback Derek Wendel of the University of Ottawa Gee-Gees have been added to the team's first-ever training camp line-up as non-roster invitees.

Both players will work out with the REDBLACKS until the team travels to Regina for the first exhibition game against the Saskatchewan Roughriders on June 13.

"It's important for our organization to give back to the community and we wanted to extend this invitation as a gesture of goodwill to our city's university football partners at Carleton and the University of Ottawa," said REDBLACKS' GM Marcel Desjardins.

"It's our hope that these players acquire valuable experience and take that experience to the playing field during the 2014 CIS season."

The 2013 season saw Mills complete 90 of 163 passes for 1,211 yards and five touchdowns. He also threw eight interceptions and was sacked 14 times.

Wendel, meanwhile, threw just 49 passes during the 2013 season, completing 29 of them for 448 yards and four touchdowns.

The Gee Gee pivot also tossed two interceptions and was sacked three times.

Inviting university QBs to camp is nothing new - Ticats have been doing it for a few years now. There is also a CFL program that places select QBs with different clubs during TC. I think pretty much every team had a young pivot invited during last year's camps.

Yes and no.
The CFL should change the ratio for the coming season to a simplified 22/22 NI/I adding QB's to the rest of the group.
Make it simply that all I QB's must be listed as DI's and a team gets 6 DI's. So that means 16 I starters + 1 QB + 7 NI's, the same mix as right now, except if a NI QB is being used that team gains an extra DI spot and if a NI QB starts there is no ratio impact(he doesn't need a NI back-up, the entire 'logic' for QB's being exempt from the ratio)
Then adding something like an optional 47 roster spot or extra PR spot for a NI QB, who must be strictly used in practice as a QB would also work as it would be optional, there would be no need to 'find 9 at a time' it would all be up to teams who want to use it and the amount of NI QB talent that's out there.
Also make it so that a NI QB if he uses the 47th roster spot doesn't count against the SMS for up to the league min, so other players can't complain that it's 'hurting their salaries'

Still think the CFL should have a rule requiring the 3rd or 4th quarterback
to be Canadian. Why should having Canadian QBs in camp be merely a "goodwill
gesture"?
