Ticats Sign Martell Mallett
With files from the Canadian Press

HAMILTON -- Head Coach George Cortez confirmed Friday that Hamilton Tiger-Cats RB Martell Mallett has suffered a season-ending injury Thursday morning.

Mallett, the CFL's outstanding rookie in 2009, suffered a torn Achilles tendon at the club's morning workout.

Hamilton had high hopes for the 26-year-old native of Pine Bluff, Ark., who captured the CFL's top rookie award in '09 with the B.C. Lions. That season, he ran for over 1,240 yards _ including a Lions'-record 213 in a game against Montreal. After signing Mallett as a free agent this off-season, the Ticats released veteran Avon Cobourne, a top free-agent signing in 2011 who ran for 961 yards for the club last season.

After his breakout CFL campaign, the six-foot, 195-pound Mallett signed a deal with the Philadelphia Eagles to start a two-year roller-coaster ride that saw him spend time with three NFL clubs Cleveland, the Eagles again and the New York Giants - before returning to the CFL.

With Mallett out, the Ticats are now in the market for another running back and there are capable veteran replacements available, including Cobourne, 33. The others include Joffrey Reynolds, the Calgary Stampeders' all-time rushing leader, and Wes Cates, a former Stampeder and Saskatchewan Roughrider.

CS: what's the topper is you make more errors then attenpt to correct them and make them worse. case in point: you post a comment that cobourne has been released twice. when confronted on the statement you take offence call me the idiot and change cobourne to being traded once and released once while yet again totally wrong. for somebody who calls himself a CFL expert you sure get alot of things wrong. to put you to bed first off cobourne has never been traded, been released one time and has been a FA one time in 2011 going from montreal to the hammer and your rest don't count.

CS: you add 2 more posts with plenty of errors and then attempt to whitewash your slate clean and call me an idiot for confronting you on your errors. for me there`s no need to point out your continuing errors since you refuse to accept the fact all you do is repeat press releases.

Really Tough break for Mallet and the Cats. Unfortunately this is the kind of thing that Cobourne and Reynolds would need. question for ticat fans as you would know best? would cobourne be ok with coming back after being released twice in as many years after posting solid season? or would it be better to bring in reynolds who has no connection. They will definitely need a Qualified starter to fill the hole and it may be just for this season.

reynolds has no connection to the organization. His connection would be more of a positive one playing with Burris and for cortez.

Yes unfortunately, Mallett is likely out for the season and with Terry Grant also on the 9 game IR, other backs in camp will have the opportunity to step up and possibly snag a starting job. If needed, I'm sure a suitable vet will be found whether Coborne, Reynolds or someone else. A really tough break for Mallett who was really impressing at TC!

Well I know there was the one other back that had the 4.33 40 yard dash time and has looked good but man this hurts pretty bad was going to keep the defence honest, but really we were probably just going to throw the ball every play anyways lol
