Report: Messam set to sign with Roughriders | | Official Site of the Canadian Football League Staff

REGINA -- According to Sportsnet's Arash Madani, the Saskatchewan Roughriders have added Canadian tailback Jerome Messam to their practice roster.

The news comes three weeks after Messam was released by the Alouettes following their first pre-season game agains the Tiger-Cats.

The Toronto native was acquired by the Als in a trade with the Eskimos prior to the 2013 season. In 13 appearances last season, Messam ran for 565 yards and a pair of touchdowns on 121 carries.

He also hauled in 31 passes for 317 yards.

In four CFL seasons, Messam has ran for 1,882 yards and 11 touchdowns, while also reeling in 71 passes for 698 yards.

The 2011 season was by far Messam's best, as he ran for a career-high 1,057 yards and six touchdowns with the Eskimos, earning Most Outstanding Canadian honours in the process.

Canadian depth at RB is good. For some reason, Riders have only dressed one running back and when Allen got benched, there wasn't a legitimate running threat. Maybe a Canadian would have a chance to get in the roster, since InterNational Hugh Charles has been dressed.

Hughes is a decent runner when called upon, and he's a fantastic blocker in the backfield. The biggest issue with Charles is his blocking, which I think is why they now have 2 potential starters on the PR (3if you include Toston who looked good in TC)
